Born in 1952, David started well but in the spring of 1955, when he was 2.5 years old, he contracted polio, just 2 weeks after the announcement that a vaccination had been discovered. David went through several years of rehab and started on his journey to overcome the physical restrictions that were the result with his bout with polio.
As the challenge was physical, that is where David put his focus. High School football, mountain climbing and bicycling in Europe (even running with the bulls in Pamplona) were his signs that despite his mobility challenge, he had whipped polio.
Or so David thought. After a number of active careers from Dental Hygiene, teaching radiology physics, archery, volunteer fire chief and professional photographer, He is now back in the struggle against polio. This time it is the return of the symptoms, not the disease itself. Joint, bone and muscle pain and a continued loss of strength in his polio-affected left leg have left him back on crutches after some 45 years of freedom from mobility equipment.
In 2005 David was in Uganda, East Africa with his wife Candice where they witnessed an incredible need for mobility devices. The impact of seeing the need first hand was the seed that grew into Crutches 4 Africa. Since the inception, 212,000 mobility devices have been given away free to people in need in 17 countries in Africa and 11 countries in other parts of the developing world.
David is a Paul Harris fellow and is a member of Mountain Foothills Rotary club in Evergreen Colorado, and was the 2011 recipient of the International Service Award for a Polio Free World.
Update: On November 13th, 2016, David died. He experienced major cardiac arrest during which his heart stopped altogether. CPR was performed for over 30 minutes and his heart was restarted with the help of 11 electrical shocks. His story of “new life” and recovery continues.

Update from President Anne Slack
I hope you enjoy Longley’s article on our finances. I want all of us to have a good knowledge about what our club is.
Please remember to turn your Membership Satisfaction Survey’s in to me either this Thursday or the first Thursday in September. I am getting some good feedback from those members that have turned in their surveys. I will give you a report at our Annual meeting on October 3.
Remember NO MEETING next week, August 29th, a 5th Thursday. But remember what Scott Robbins, our Membership Director, said. Plan on socializing before, during intermission, or after, at the John Denver Tribute Concert.
Also, Carl reminded us that Rotarians can buy their tickets for the John Denver Tribute Concert for $35 before August 31st. At the door, tickets will cost $40. Come and enjoy Brad Fitch’s presentation of John Denver songs.

Carl Robicheaux announced the John Denver Tribute Concert on Aug. 31. Tickets are $35 if you buy them before the 30th, but $40 if you get them at the door. Ushers are still needed, so please consider helping out.
Tara Moenning thanked everyone for the help on the Shred-a-Thon. Numbers were down a bit from last year, but the effort still brought in $1700. The traffic flow was much improved from last year.
Tim Moore announced the Elk Fest and asked for volunteers to help. It’s on Sept. 28-29. He is sending around a sign-up.
Annie announced the Greeley Centennial Rotary Colorado fundraiser Qwik Draw on Aug. 24 at 5:00 pm. There is an article in the August 15th Spoke with more information.
Beth Weisberg gave a check for $3500 to Sue Yowell, Executive Director of the Learning Place. The funds will provide a portable library that will particularly help our immigrant families.

Our Mission: collecting, shipping, and distributing mobility devices. We collect used and surplus mobility devices*, ship them to developing countries, and distribute them ~ free ~ to people with physical mobility challenges regardless of their race, gender, tribe, age, or religion.

From Longley: Information on Our Finances
Dear Members, I asked Longley for information on our finances to pass along to you. This is what he sent me.
“This is the rough break down of our dues. I did combine a couple categories and rounded up/down a dollar here and there, but it should give members a pretty good idea of how their dues are used. You can remind the members that their dues are strictly used for administrative purposes and not projects.”

Club Financial Dynamics
The only money we have for projects comes from Elk Fest and Friendship Card sales. That money is then available to International Services, Youth Services and Community Services on a first come first serve basis.

Nominating Committee Members Changed
Thanks to the following Rotarians for volunteering to be on the Nominating Committee: Jack Ford, Sarah Walsh, Carl Robicheaux, Chris Davis and Paula Edwards. Their job is to develop a list of qualified nominees for Officers and Directors for 2025-2026 Rotary fiscal year. Officers positions include a President Elect Nominee, Secretary, Treasurer and Sergeant-at-Arms. Directorate positions that are open this year are: Community Service, International Service and Fund Development. If you are interested in any position, please contact one of the members listed above. Their decisions have to be completed by the middle of September to allow time to notify the club three times before our Annual Meeting on October 3rd per our Bylaws.
Fundraising for the Scholarship Fund - Update
Thanks to everyone who has signed up for the Shred-a-thon on Saturday, August 10th.
The sign-up sheet for the John Denver Tribute Concert volunteers is now circulating. Here we need people for various tasks that are spread out over the noon to 3:30 pm time frame, and then for the 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm time frame. Clean-up help from 8:30 pm until 9 pm would be appreciated as well. Update: We still need volunteers for the John Denver Tribute Concert, especially ushers.
Update: Sponsors, and donations in memory of someone, are always welcome. These help to defray the costs and allow more of the proceeds to go to the Scholarship Fund.

August 22 Update:
John Denver Tribute Concert, August 31st, 2024, at the YMCA Ruesch Auditorium, doors open at 4 pm, Random and True performing from 5 pm – 6 pm, and Brad Fitch and his Tropicowboy Band performing from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm.
The concert has been designated as the “Social” for the 5th Thursday month of August. Rotarians may purchase tickets for $35 until Friday, August 30th—they will be $40 at the door. They may sit in unclaimed seats in sections A and G, or in any general admission sections. Another alternative would be to be a sponsor—for $100 you would get two general admission tickets and have your name listed as a sponsor. To socialize with other Club members we will gather on the deck during intermission.
We are still looking for volunteers to usher: 4 pm to 6:30 pm.
