In Tom's own words: I did work as brakeman for the ROCK ISLAND RR summers while in college and for a month right after graduating from OU in 1958, then went directly to the USAF. I resigned my regular commission as a Captain in January 1965, from Germany and went directly to TWA. Promoted to Captain in 1968. I have a captain’s rating in every JET that TWA ever owned. I will talk about both careers.

Update from President Anne Slack
Thanks to everyone who participated in Elk Fest. I don’t think I have ever seen the town so crowded with people and cars...not at Arts & Craft Fair or Autumn Gold or even Duck Race.
We have a Board Meeting Tuesday night, October 1st at 5 PM in the Wasson Room at the Library. Please know you are welcome to attend and see your Board at work!
District Assembly is October 12 up in Cheyenne, WY. Do consider going. I wish I could but I am headed for a 30-year reunion of my Physical Therapy class at Texas Tech University.
I had planned on getting a fresh picture of our members at our Annual Meeting but I am going to wait until we have a program that draws a full house.

Meeting Notes, Sept 26, 2024
President Anne Slack called the meeting to order.
Invocation by Bill Smith.

Guests were from the staff of our program organization today – Cerissa Hocker and Autumn Nelson of EVICS Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success.
We were happy to see Michelle Mann back with us today.
Annie acknowledged birthdays of Guy Van der Werf and Ron Gordon and wedding anniversaries of Rosenbaum’s and Jonell’s.

Our club goes to Restoration Ranch on Oct 25. There is room for 3 more.
Our photo contest for the Friendship Card will be announced in the paper tomorrow.
Annie is attending the memorial service for Lee Manchin today after this meeting.
Annie attended Jack Overly’s memorial service last Saturday. He loved pies so many types were served.
Tim Moore thanked those who signed up to pour beer for Elkfest this weekend. We still have a few slots open. Thompsons have offered us parking at their office across the street.
Beth Weisberg reported on Bright Christmas. We will again adopt a family but last year we nearly came up short of money for the big family we requested. This time we will collect money first from our members over the next few weeks and then tell them what size family we can take on. Checks can be made to our club with Bright Christmas Family in the memo line.
Scott Robbins said the Membership Committee meets today after this meeting. He can’t do it alone and he needs help from us to recruit and he will follow up and meet prospects.
Karen Thompson said it’s time for the Friendship Card for 2025. It is the biggest money maker for the club’s treasury at about $12,000. It is time for us to confirm with the 80 current businesses to renew for next year and recruit new ones. She has lists of about 10 businesses to contact for us to take on.
Carl Robicheaux said the Nominations Committee meets today after this meeting.
Bill Smith said we have 3 cards for members to sign.

I was reviewing the duck race budget and we are paying $2,750 per year or $.34 per duck per year for our storage locker. This is not a cost that we can cover from our duck sales and is significant. Ilan Levy who is a Fort Collins Rotarian and has been to our meetings in the past is the owner of Exodus Moving and Storage. He has offered us a storage container at no charge that we can use to store our duck stuff. This is very generous and will save the duck race a lot of money. But we need a place to park the storage container. It will be about the size of a parking space and could go in a back yard, next to a garage, or anywhere you have space. Please let me know if you or someone you know has a location where we can park the storage container.

Membership Minute
Hello, all you Rotarians!
As your Membership Director, I have some news for you all! Healthy membership in our Estes Park Rotary Club requires the efforts of every one of us. Toward that end, I have printed up some business cards to act as teasers for any prospective members you run across. One side has a QR code that takes them to the Rotary International Site and the other side has contact information for me, your Membership Director. I will have cards available at the sign-in table at our Thursday Meetings. Please take a few to give to prospective members that want to learn more. I am happy to talk to them.
Secondly, the August, 2024 Rotary magazine had an essay on the importance of having a place to go to talk with old friends and make new ones. As we age and become more isolated from friends, that becomes even more important to our mental health and happiness than it may have been when we were younger. With that in mind, we will have our first get-together of the “Small Talk” coffee club. We will meet at Coffee on the Rocks at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 5. I will stake out a couple of tables to meet (outside if the weather is good, inside if not). It will be a chance to learn more about each other, share a joke or two, and maybe even meet a new person interested in joining our club. We will plan to meet once a month. Please let me know if you plan to join us. I would love to see you there!
Finally, our Membership Committee met last Thursday and agreed to explore some other ways of getting together socially. These may be small, informal things like taking a walk around Lake Estes or bigger outings like going to a play or music performance down-valley. These events will not be limited to our 5th Thursday activity time. Some ideas we are exploring are: bowling, a wine and cheese get-together, dinner outing, and a poker night. We would love to have your feedback on these ideas as well as any of your own. Feel free to talk with any of our Membership Committee members: Anne Slack, Jim Whiteneck, Karen Thompson, Bill Solms, Bill Smith, or myself.

FOR OUR BRIGHT CHRISTMAS FAMILY
We won't be passing around the collection can this Thursday because Beth won't be at the meeting. But if anyone wants to support buying gifts for the family our Club will be adopting through Bright Christmas this year, please give your cash or checks this week to Gregg Jurgens. Checks should be made payable to Rotary Club of Estes Park, and write "Bright Christmas family" in the memo line. Please do not make your check payable to Bright Christmas -- if you do, we won't be able to use it to buy gifts for our adopted family.
Beth will be back next week (October 10) and will be passing around the collection can again then and for the rest of October.
Once we know how much money we have, we will know how large or small a family we can adopt.
Restoration Ranch Colorado, a 501(c)(3), provides recreation, respite, and vacation opportunities to emergency communication specialists (dispatchers), fire/EMS, law enforcement including Department of Corrections and park rangers, ED/ICU personnel, victims’ advocates, members of the judiciary, and their families.
Let me know if you would like to join us. Right now 9 people are going, 7 from Sunrise Rotary and 2 from our Rotary. There are 15 spots available. Steve and Kaylyn Kruger will host us, providing lunch as well as tours of their hiking trails.
Our purpose is to assess if we want to contribute to their project.
