Planning for the future: long-term care

Alyssa Bergman from Prospect Park Living Center will present a program discussing long-term care to the Estes Park Rotary Club at their regular noon meeting on Thursday, September 25.

In 2000, almost 10 million people needed some form of long-term care in the United States.  Almost 70% of people turning age 65 will need long-term care at some point in their lives.  Alyssa will provide basic information on long-term care and what Prospect Park Living Center has to offer.  Everyone’s path is unique and is based upon your preferences and circumstances.  Alyssa will discuss options, what to look for and how to get started.

Alyssa Bergman has been at Estes Park Medical Center for over six years working in various departments that include Prospect Park Living Center as a social worker, EPMC social worker, discharge planner, and Hospice volunteer coordinator and social worker. This past spring, she became the full-time Resident and Family Services Director at Prospect Park Living Center.

Alyssa received her undergraduate degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and her Master’s degree from Colorado State University.
Shred-a-Thon help needed

The Club will be holding a Shred-a-Thon on Saturday October 11, 2014, 9 am to 1 pm, at the Fairgrounds.  We will need several members to assist so please let Chuck, Tara, or Ron know if you are able to volunteer a few hours that morning to help.
  • We need a couple of people to help direct traffic
  • Several to unload materials, break down boxes
  • Someone to help Ron solicit donations. Donations from this community service event go to scholarships.

All-call for grant applicants

The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation has announced the opening of the application process for the 2014-2015 Community Rotary Grants Program. The Foundation, in partnership with the noon Rotary, invites grant proposals from charitable or other tax-exempt organizations in the Estes Valley. The deadline for receipt of the completed applications is January 2, 2015. Awards will be announced in late January 2015.

”It’s anticipated that these proposals will support programs and projects that help foster the general well-being of our community while advancing the principles and purposes of Rotary,” said Dave Evans, Community Grants Chairman for the Foundation. “The recipient organizations address a wide variety of causes, including support for the arts, for youth and the elderly, as well as overall community needs.”

Charitable non-profit organizations may download both the application and guidelines from the Rotary Club's website at www.rotaryclubofestespark.org under the heading, “Community Grants.”  Requests for hard copy of the application and guidelines may be mailed to The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation, PO Box 1854, Estes Park, CO  80517. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

The mission of the Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation is to help foster the general well-being of the Estes Park community. Created in 1977, the Foundation fulfills the mission in two ways. It annually awards scholarships to qualified youth graduating in May from the Estes Park High School. It also awards grants to 501(c)(3) and other tax-exempt charitable organizations in the community each spring.

The Club generates funds for these purposes by conducting several public fundraisers: a musical event, the Duck Race, and a golf tournament. Other member events and raffles also are conducted throughout the year. In addition, the Foundation receives donations and bequests from members and their families.

“Although there is never enough money to support all the worthwhile causes, last year the Foundation proudly awarded over $15,000 in grants to 18 organizations,” Evans said. The largest grant was $2,000, and the average grant size was $834. Since 2004, the Foundation has provided almost $162,000 to organizations in the Estes Valley. Since its creation in 1977, the Foundation has awarded funds totaling over $1 million for college-bound student scholarships and grants to local organizations.

Announcements and Happy Money
Will resume Sept. 25, due to two programs Sept. 18.

Program
Lauren Nigel, returning Rotary exchange student who lived in Ecuador during the past year, gave an illustrated presentation on her experiences. She explained the climate diversity that creates four separate zones in that South American country. She lived with a welcoming family and enjoyed their warm family life.  Among new foods she tried were guinea pig, worms and pig ears. She enjoyed some delicacies more than others. The 140 Rotary exchange students to Ecuador’s single Rotary District came from all points of the globe. Lauren and her schoolmates and friends enjoyed a full social life during this special year of expanded horizons and intense learning.

Program
Jim White introduced K-Lynn Cameron, who presented a program on the Help Preserve Open Space ballot measure. She discussed successful Open Space projects, such as Hermit Park and Lily Lake, which have been completed thanks to previous funding approval by voters in Larimer County. The proposed tax measure, Issue 1A on the November ballot, would extend existing funding for 25 years, beginning in 2019. Funds would continue to be used for both land acquisition and land management, as determined by local governments. Several Rotarians expressed their enjoyment and frequent use of Open Space areas.

Rotary Quote of the Week

What is Rotary? Thousands have made answer each in his own way. It is easier to note what Rotary does than what it is. One recently has said, "If Rotary has encouraged us to take a more kindly outlook on life and men; if Rotary has taught us greater tolerance and the desire to see the best in others; if Rotary has brought us pleasant and helpful contacts with others who are also trying to capture and radiate the joy and beauty of life, then Rotary has brought us all we can expect."
-Paul P. Harris, from the forward to "My Road to Rotary," 1947
