This week's program:
Rick Taylor to present on leadership

"Our program is about a particular kind of leadership model," said Rick Taylor. " It’s called collaborative leadership and it is the opposite of the heroic model where the one recognized leader is the indispensable one with the plan."

So Zoom in or come to Nicky's for this timely presentation to our club. Why timely? The Nominating Committee is searching for next year's leaders, and the Duck Race Committee has just completed the process of choosing a new Big and Little Duck. Rick's presentation may energize our approach to leadership!

The Taylors

The presentation will include a 15-minute video on the theme of collaborative leadership by an experienced leader in the field. After the video, Rick Taylor will share a few thoughts of his own. Then he’ll facilitate a conversation with all of us together on our theme of collaborative leadership. He'll pose a few questions for us to consider.

Rick has had a variety of leadership experiences, all in the non-profit sector. His primary career for 20 years was as a YMCA Director for Ys in Denver and Houston. Since retiring from paid work in 2011, his volunteer work has been as a leader in several local volunteer organizations, including Rotary, Estes Park Non-Profit Resource Center, Boulder Friends of Jung, The Journeys Class for Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, and two local Homeowner's Associations.

Update from President Bill Solms

We had a full week with a final Duck Race meeting for 2020 and a kick start for 2021!! Details to follow as we search for the proper type of race to run May 1, 2021.  Great to see our committees active and gearing up for their next projects!  Also, our Board meets Tuesday at 5 p.m. Thank you Scott for hosting.

Wow, what a huge responsibility for Vern Carda to get Estes Park Health through the next few years. Those of us who wish to see a nursing home here in Estes need to get together to work out a workable plan since these facilities are not profitable business entities. While this has been accommodated in the past, current conditions are requiring a new approach. The present facility at the hospital is not occupied to full capacity with about 27 residents currently; even at full capacity the facility will not house the 49 residents needed to break even. New sources of revenue are needed to preserve this local resource. Hopefully there will be some constructive new ideas surfacing to keep this resource... More to come in the near future...

Hope to see you all this Thursday, and Invite a friend!

Register now for the District Virtual Assembly

It's time to sign up for the Virtual Fall District Assembly on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9-11:30 a.m. The District Assembly will include presentations on Fundraising during COVID-19 and Membership, and the featured speaker is RI President Holger Knaack. Holger will join the program promptly at 10 am for his presentation.

Holger Knaack, a member of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany, is the new president of Rotary International in 2020-21.To build a stronger membership, Holger Knaack says Rotary must focus on increasing the number of female members and transitioning Rotaractors into Rotarians. Knaack believes that the People of Action campaign offers new public awareness possibilities for Rotary. “This campaign conveys our global image while still respecting differences in regions and cultures,” he says.

Member Spotlight - Milt Garrett

Each week our Spoke is profiling a member of our Club in order to get to know them better and stay connected through these socially distant times.

Milt Garrett

Why I Joined Rotary? My uncle, a 60-year perfect attendance Rotarian, paid my way so I could become a Charter Member of a new Albuquerque Rotary Club. That date of induction was February 23, 1988, the anniversary of the founding of Rotary. Because my one sentence, lifetime mission statement was/is, “To learn and help others,” he thought I’d be a perfect fit. The Estes Park club is now my sixth overall Rotary Club membership.

Why did we, my ex and I, come to Estes Park? It was just four days of the 9/11 attack when I bought the home in Ranch Meadow. As you know, geographically, Estes is a heck of a lot closer to DIA. than Grand Junction (GJT) is, dollars and distances. (I was a Rotarian in GJT, where I first began working with Russians with their economic recovery efforts.) Therefore, for my Russian clients and her IBM clients, that move meant a cost savings of multiples of hundreds of dollars in airfare that my Russian entrepreneurs and her IBM executives did not have to spend for our travel expenses. Maybe IBM could withstand a $400+ airfare, but not those emerging from the 1990s economic disaster in Russia. An added benefit to selecting Estes was my sister, Connie Dedon, lived here.

While I still have a home in Estes Park, Ranch Meadow. However, I now live all over the globe (when the pandemic is not influencing my travels): I have had 21 different addresses since leasing it out. (I have had a total of 50 addresses: 12 in Colorado, 12 states and seven countries.) “The world is a candy store,” Dad said, “go find the chocolates.” Bingo: Estes Park is the best chocolate; now Fort Collins (temporarily).

BIOGRAPHY: Milt graduated from Texas A&M University (Industrial Engineering doctorate), the Disney University and the University of Northern Colorado (B.S., M.S.).  He went on to teach on, or for, 15 universities and colleges in the USA and five in Russia.  Forty-two years ago, he opened his own company, Garrett Group International. As a professor emeritus, dean, department head and HR director from the University of New Mexico, he travels worldwide as part of the International Quality movement and management development for public and private organizations.  Last year he was invited to be one of 50 citizen diplomates, with origins from five countries, to interview ten Russian experts and then visited Russians, at random, in eight cities for their perspectives on US-Russian relations – Crimea being one of the locations. For the last 22 years, his company has focused on economic recovery of Russia, of which 10 of those years were pro bono on behalf of Rotary, for the Estes club and the GJT club.

Doug Mann makes his debut as an author

Congratulations to our very own Doug Mann on the publication of his first book, Jericho March, on Sept. 28. It chronicles his personal faith journey.

Doug has been a member of our club since December 1, 2016 and served as 2019-20 president. He has worked in nonprofit management with Nehemiah Gateway USA and is currently Director of Marketplace Missions and Alpha Relief at Global Advance, Inc.

Doug Mann

In Jericho March, Doug chronicles his humanitarian work in some of the world’s most dangerous locales, including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and The Balkans. The publisher describes the book:

“Braving discovery and arrest, Doug smuggled Bibles behind the Cold War Iron Curtain, helped facilitate a hostage recovery with Somali pirates, navigated humanitarian relief efforts during the Kosovo War, and traveled in tumultuous Sudan. Throughout it all, Doug's faith was challenged and strengthened as he learned that God was always bigger than his circumstances.”

Doug’s desire to share his story with his three adult children prompted him to write the book. Once into the process, he saw the possibility that a wider audience might find his story interesting.

“My kids have always known about our travels and adventures, as they’ve lived some of them with us, but I wanted to write my experiences down so that they would get the big picture as to what was going on with their parents during those early years of their lives,” Mann said.

As Covid-19 advanced, Mann’s international travel to Pakistan, Croatia, Ecuador and Uganda for Global Advance was canceled, giving him more time to focus on compiling notes and crafting his book. While he enjoys writing, Mann notes that the yearlong process of writing this book was more difficult than he anticipated.

“I had been challenged for years by a work colleague to write a book detailing my adventures up to this point in life, but I have always been reluctant to do so,” Mann said. “In November of this past year (2019) I started looking over notes that I had taken over the years of events that had transpired during my journeys. I realized that it was now or never if I wanted to actually write this book.”

Mann credits three professional editors for polishing his writing, but one of them, his wife Michelle, “was outstanding.”

Jericho March is available from Freiling Publishing on Amazon and his website, www.douglasmann.com for $13.99. By using the AmazonSmile buying option, our Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation will receive a portion of the sale.
Submit your photo for 2021 Friendship Card

It's time to enter your best work in the photo contest for the 2021 Friendship Card. There is no charge to enter, and the winner will receive photo credit on the card and two 2021 Friendship Cards. The deadline for photos is October 26, 2020.

The Friendship Card, which provides discounts at local businesses, debuted in 2019, replacing the long-time Rocky Card. The Rotary Club of Estes Park re-established the card as a fundraiser for club projects and community grants. A recent $500 grant to the Community Corner Café will help fund its operations.

“In its first year, almost 700 cards were sold, and we anticipate that number will increase as people become aware of the value the card brings to local shoppers,” said Karen Thompson, fund development director. “In 2020, 71 local businesses participated by providing some type of discount to cardholders. Rotary is very thankful for all the participating businesses, especially the Estes Park News for their continuous advertising throughout the summer.”

To enter the photo contest, email a favorite Estes Valley/RMNP photo in high resolution, jpg format to epfriendshipcard@gmail.com. A panel of judges will select the winning photo. Cropping and slight color correction are allowed for photos, but photos with anything added or taken away through a photo editing program will be rejected. All decisions of the judges are final. The winner will be notified by email. The winning photo may also be used in other marketing materials for the Friendship Card. Owner of the photo will receive no compensation other than photo credit and two 2021 Friendship Cards.

The 2020 Friendship Card costs $10, is valid until December 31, 2020, and is available for sale at Nicky’s Restaurant, Rocky Mountain Gateway, The Village Store at National Park Village, Safeway Guest Services, MacDonald Book Store, and Quality Inn.

Proceeds from the Friendship Card fund Rotary club projects and grants, including a $500 award to the Community Corner Café. Bruce Brackman, Community Corner Café representative, recently accepted the grant from Karen Thompson, just in time for the 2020-21 season of free meals for all every Friday beginning October 2. Meals will be provided on a take-out only basis at the Shepherd of the Mountains Church.
