Kathy Whitacre is the Estes Park Program Coordinator for Partners who helps match youth age 7-17 with positive adult role models to enrich lives and build community. Before joining Partners, Kathy worked 20+ years as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and Flood Recovery Specialist. After a successful career helping people recover from traumatic injuries and events, Kathy now facilitates building enriching relationships between our youth, adults, and community. Just a few quick comments this week. Last Thursday evening got a bit blustery with the snow coming in which probably hampered more people getting out and enjoying Carl’s gumbo. It was terrific! Thanks Carl!
I hope everyone enjoyed their extra hour of sleep Sunday morning and turned clocks back Saturday night.

Announcements: Jack Boatman reminded the group that applications for charitable giving matching gifts are due on November 17. Application forms are on the table. Tara Moenning reported that the Scholarship dinner is scheduled on December 6 at the Twin Owls restaurant starting at 5:00. Carl Robicheaux has prepared 25 gallons of Gumbo for dinner at the American Legion starting at 5:00 tonight.

2022 Matching Charitable Donation Program
Due Date: November 17, 2022
The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation is conducting a matching charitable donation program this fall to supplement donations to local non-profits.
The maximum matching donation amount is $150 per member and the minimum donation amount is $50. Rotary Club of Estes Park members will be able to apply for matching donations from the Foundation between October 13 and November 17, 2022.
The Foundation will be providing matching donations to qualified 501(c)(3) organizations serving Estes Valley residents and in good standing with the Colorado Secretary of State.
The application form which provides detailed instructions is available on the club website and will be available at the weekly club meetings. You will also be receiving an email with the application form attached.

Virgil Holtgrewe's Rotary Moment
Virgil and Carol Holtgrewe
Our Methodist Minister in Hebron, Nebraska invited me to join Rotary in 1959. I did not know anything about Rotary and asked the president of the company I was working for if I could. He was a member of the Omaha, Nebraska Rotary Club. He said it was a good way to meet business people in the area, so do it. I became a MEMBER. During my membership in the Hebron Rotary, I served on different committees and was elected president.
We moved to Fort Morgan, CO in 1964 and because of my experience at Hebron, they asked me to be secretary. I served as secretary for 4 years. This is where we met Wayne and Pat Newsom.
Our family moved to Wheat Ridge, CO and I joined the Lakewood Rotary in 1959. Our two daughters were selected for the Youth Exchange Program and each went overseas for one year. One in South Africa and other in the Philippines. When asked to join the District Youth Exchange Committee, I accepted and became its chairman for two years. During the next years, I served on many different District Committees and became an Assistant District Governor and lead a Group Study Exchange to South Korea. I also helped to develop PETS (President Elect Training Seminar) for the District.
Carol was a great supporter of my involvement and encouraged me to be active in other Avenues of Service. District Governor Stan Black wanted to start a RYLA program in the District and asked me to explore the possibilities of creating one. Over the next two years I wrote the guidelines for a co-ed camp and it was started in 1987. This was when women still were not admitted to Rotary. RYLA is still going today with more than 10,000 campers attending to date. Before leaving the Rotary Club of Lakewood, I served on many committees and was elected President. It is these 45 years in the Lakewood Rotary that Carol and I both became ROTARIANS.
We moved to Estes Park in 2014 and joined the Noon Rotary Club of Estes Park. These have been 63 wonderful years of service resulting in International travel, attending three Rotary annual conferences and meeting fellow Rotarians from all over the world.
My Rotary Moment ——
Carol and I were asked to chaperone a Youth Exchange Party at the 1984 District Conference held at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Eleven o’clock was the curfew time and we finally got the 43 exchange student from all over the world to start the walk to the dorm. One of the student’s had a radio “boom box” and was playing music. Walking in the middle of the street, making a lot of noise, the popular song at that time was “We are the World, We are the Children of the World——“ The boom box was set down in the middle of the street and the students circled the music and sang, all arm in arm, along with the music. Carol and I stood on the side of the street, arm in arm, and cried to see what was happening. I believe I turned to Carol and said “This is Rotary”.

"Rotary provides such a great platform for individuals to grow and learn from others and be of serves to those near and far. I definitely believe I grew and learned a lot from the gifted members in our Club and with the quality of our members I am confident that our Club will continue to grow and do great things both locally and internationally. I wish I had time to say “Good Bye” to all the members personally, but things have happen very suddenly with the sale of our house here in Estes and the purchase of a new house in Adel, Iowa. We will be closer to our son, other family member and childhood friends. Estes Park has been very good to us, but our roots were always very deep in Iowa."

The Rotary Club of Estes Park has received over 100 submissions to its photo contest for the 2023 Friendship Card for Local Discounts. A panel of judges will select the winning photo. All decisions of the judges are final. The winner will be notified via email. The winning photo may also be used on other marketing materials for the Friendship Card. Owner of the photo will not receive any other compensation other than photo credit and two 2023 Friendship Cards.
