Trail grants and roundabouts:

Upcoming public works projects in Estes Park

The Town of Estes Park Public Works Department is pursuing federal grant funding in excess of $50 million for trail, roadway, bridge, and Big Thompson River channel improvement projects to be built by 2025. Additionally, roundabout control upgrades are under design for three intersections in Estes Park. Construction is anticipated in 2020, 2022, and a future date to be determined by funding availability.

Greg Muhonen, Director of the Town of Estes Park Public Works Department, will be speaking to the club on Thursday, July 11, at the regular noon meeting. His program will focus on trail grants and roundabouts.

Greg Muhonen, public works director

Muhonen earned a BS degree in Civil Engineering from Stanford University, completed graduate studies in Arctic Engineering at the University of Alaska, and is a Licensed Professional Engineer. He has used his training and life experience to serve the transportation infrastructure needs of Larimer county residents for over 33 years.

His civil engineering work experience spans private land development, land use entitlement review, traffic engineering, municipal policy, and public works capital project design and construction.  He was honored as Employee of the Year for the City of Loveland Engineering Division twice and for Program of the Year for the Larimer County Urban Area Street Standards.

As Estes Park Director of Public Works for five years, he oversees all aspects of the streets, parks, engineering, facilities, parking/transit, and fleet divisions for the Town. In 2017, he received the Public Works Project Award for the Estes Park Transit Facility Parking Structure.

Tournament a success, thanks to sponsors

The 23rd Rotary Tournament for Scholarships exceeded its financial goals and provided a day of great golf for 64 participants on June 29.

“We broke all records this year, thanks to the many generous sponsors whose pledges topped $17,400,” said Ron Gordon, co-chair with Jay Harroff of the sponsorship effort.

Golfers enjoyed a morning on the 18-hole course, entertaining challenges and prizes from Dixon Golf, followed by a buffet barbeque from Smokin’ Dave’s, an awards presentation for top golfers and a drawing for 60 gifts and prizes.

The low net score foursome of Matt Garcia, Carl Robicheaux, Bill Solms and Dwight Stanford took first place. The team of  Brad Rosenbaum, Donna Grim and Steven McCrane received first place honors for low gross score.

Many generous sponsors, including local businesses, Rotarians and friends who support the scholarship program donated prizes. This multiplied the fun for participants, Chairman Peter Sinnott noted.

Farmers Market: show your Rotary spirit

Our Community Service has begun at the Farmers Market every Thursday morning in Bond Park, and you are invited to be a part of it.

Jim Austin has been the 'face of Rotary' to Vicki and the vendors at the market. When Jim leaves in mid July, we will need a "point person" each week to coordinate us with Vicki each Thursday. Can you help do that?

Furthermore we need a couple of volunteers each Thursday. Yes, the market is open through 1:00 p.m. so you will get meeting credit if you work at the market during the Rotary meeting.

This effort keeps Rotary in front of people we know in Estes - and the visitors.

If you are interested in volunteering you can think of it in one long shift or two shifts from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm on Thursdays. While helping with parking or loading where we can; the best part is ambassadorial by smiling and making the vendors and attendees to the market feel welcome in the Estes Park way.

Let me know if any dates appeal to you between now and through the last Thursday in September.

Thanks for considering a pleasurable opportunity for Community Service by our Club members. Let me know which Thursdays appeal to you. Neighbors, visitors and grandkids are always welcome to work along with you.

Volunteer Coordinator for Community Service
