This week's program: Tom and Marilyn Maher share their Myanmar journey

Tom and Marilyn Maher, world travelers, will speak at the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, June 9, at their regular noon meeting. They will describe their journey through Myanmar (Burma) via the river highways.

With recent political changes in 2010, Myanmar has become more accessible for tourists. The Irrawaddy River valley forms the historical, cultural and economic heartland of Myanmar. Hence, a river cruise is an excellent way to explore this culturally diverse country and to meet the people living along its river banks.

After graduating from Oklahoma University, Tom Maher served in the U.S. Air Force, where he was a fighter pilot and was honored as Top Gun for both the F100 Super Sabre and F105 Thunder Chief. Afterwards, he flew for Trans World Airlines (TWA) for 30 years, spending more than 25,000 hours in the air. He is a past Rotarian of the Year in 1999, and he has been heavily involved with the Estes Park Duck Race and with Cholera Plus projects in Bolivia, India and Africa.

A graduate of Montana State University, retired teacher Marilyn Maher taught in the Park School District for 25 years and started the Talented and Gifted program in the elementary schools. In addition, she authored the children's book “Lucky’s Adventure” about the Rotary Duck Race.

As avid explorers, Tom and Marilyn have traveled to over 100 countries together.

President Scott opened the meeting promptly at 12 noon. Karol Rinehart provided the invocation, Dick Broman, song and pledge, and Richard Kimpel – guest introductions. Everyone joined in to sing Happy Birthday to Bob Brunson who is celebrating his 95th birthday. Tara Moenning introduced scholarship award winner Liam Fogarty who was able to slip away from his summer job to say thank you for the scholarship and provide members an update on his career plans.

Announcements
  • President Scott announced that next week’s meeting will be held in the main restaurant – The Other Side, due to work being done in the lower level and other areas. There will be no regular meeting on June 23rd – instead all will celebrate President’s Night. There will also be no meeting held on June 30th as this is the 5th Thursday of the month.

An Open Letter to the Rotary Club
5 June 2016

Many of you Rotarians have heard that our Rotary District is planning to have the 2018 Rotary District Conference here in Estes Park on the same day as the Duck Race. I was very upset when I heard the news because I was afraid that the District Conference would drain off many of our members from tending to their duties on Duck Race Day as well as having fun that day. Indeed, when the District Conference was held here in Estes Park in 2012, our Club was the key resource for all the enormous hard work that the District Conference required both before and during the Conference. Upon hearing of this plan, I took the liberty of contacting Julie Phares, the organizer for the 2018 District Conference and expressing my concerns.

Julie was receptive to my concerns and set up a meeting with herself, the Rotary District Governor Elect, and interested parties from our Club. The idea for the meeting was to discuss the pros and cons of the plan.

That meeting was held after the Rotary lunch last Thursday, June 2. In attendance were Thor Homme, Ron Gordon, Tom Maher, Julie Phares, Bill Emslie the District Governor Elect, and myself. It was a very productive meeting with Bill and Julie being very attentive to our concerns.

The upshot of the meeting is that Bill and Julie are arranging the Conference schedule to have free time at the Conference on Duck Race Day, Saturday, May 5, 2018. This free time will be billed as a time for the Conference attendees to participate as Rotary spectators to our Duck Race (and purchase Adoptions) in order to see how our Rotary fundraising efforts help our community. It’ll be a great way for Rotarians in our District to learn more about our Club.

We agreed that the Home Hospitality Night planned for Thursday would not interfere with the efforts of our Ducksters as we prepare for the Race. In the past, the Home Hospitality Night offered during the 2012 District Conference was a big hit and proved to be an excellent way to meet and get to know other Rotarians.

Most importantly, Bill and Julie agreed that the enormous work and resources required for the Conference would NOT necessarily involve our Rotary Club in any significant way. Bill and Julie plan on using the other two Clubs in Estes Park and Clubs in the District to provide the backbone of the resources for the Conference while we are free to do our usual hard work on making the Duck Race a success. Of course, if a member of our Club wants to help out with the Conference, they are free to do so.

It was a good meeting. We look forward to having the Conference here in Estes Park and believe that it will be a great way to get to know other Rotarians in our District as well as having the District learn more about our Duck Race. Thor, Ron, Tom, and I are no longer concerned about this issue and support the Conference efforts wholeheartedly.

Rotary Quote of the Week

"The grandest opportunity to serve humanity is directly before us. Let us remember that it is always darkest just before dawn. These are the before daylight hours. Let us fervently hope that when the sun does rise it will usher in a day of unprecedented glory - the day of the brotherhood of man."
