4th Thursday - Committees to Meet

The real work of a club happens at the committee level, and this week's meeting will give everyone the chance to engage in this important work. Following lunch and a brief business meeting, members will gather in groups related to their interests.

You can see what you indicated as your area of interest at the bottom of your Spoke every week. But, fear not! It's never too late to join in, try something new, or simply "shop" for a group.

Here are the club members who will lead the small group work at Thursday's meeting:

Doug Mann - International Service
Sue Fereday - Youth/New Generation Service
Karen Thompson - Fund Development
Karol Rinehart - Club Administration
Bill Solms - Sargeant-at-Arms
Rick Taylor - Programs
Scott Thompson - Membership
Roger Thorp - Community Service

Bring your energy, your ideas and your willingness to help the Rotary Club of Estes Park be a better club for all of its members. You make a difference!
March 15, 2018 meeting highlights

President Kathy Groesbeck called the meeting to order. Bill Smith announced the passing of two of our members:
  • Bruce Carmichael was a member for our club since 2009 and chaired the Golf Tournament Committee. His service will be at Community Church, April 28 at 10 a.m. Memorials may be made to Estes Park Rotary Club Foundation, memo to Scholarships.
  • Bill Lodge’s service will be at Community Church, March 19. Bill was our Sergeant at Arms for many years and was a club member since 1994.
Jack Boatman led a moment of silence for our departed members, followed by the invocation. Dave Evans led us in singing “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” for St. Patrick’s Day, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Marsha Yelick led introductions. We welcomed a guest Rotarian from Sunrise who is a friend of Harriette Woodard and is also a member of the Woman’s Club, which is the subject of today’s program. Madison Casey introduced his wife Marty. We welcomed back our honorary club member and Past President, Gladys Van Drie. Scott Thompson told an appropriate joke for St. Patrick’s Day.

Announcement
  • President Kathy remembered Bruce Carmichael and the last time she introduced him in the meeting to talk about the golf tournament. She suggested that we all tell a fellow Rotarian today that they are special and shared a reading by Shel Silverstein.
Happy Money
  • Harry Livingston is happy to see his two favorite “girlfriends” here today – Marty Casey, and our guest speaker, Nancy Thomas.
  • Bill Solms is happy for the golf committee and vowed they would continue without Bruce. They are considering how to honor him in this year’s tournament.
  • Bill Smith said Bruce’s wife, Lindi said “find a golf chair” to carry on for Bruce!

Announcements
  • Tara Moenning said the scholarship applications are in the library and she encouraged any of us to go and review them and evaluate the applicants.
  • Tara needs four more people to work our Shred-a-thon April 21.
  • Tara has petition cards for anyone to sign and turn in to support the Stanley house’s efforts to get new zoning.
  • Scott Thompson is the volunteer coordinator for the Duck Race and compiled a two page list of needs. He needs people to work Friday night, May 4 to set up as well as the day of the race, May 5.
  • President Kathy said she has struck up a relationship with a person in the Aspen Rotary Club who works their own Duck Race. They called to find out about how our online sales work and she asked them about how they do their festival activities. Since then, they have been sharing information and ideas regularly.
  • President Kathy said she has been talking to TDS who supplies our internet connection and it has evolved to where TDS will adopt 20 ducks for Polio Plus and their marketing director from Colorado Springs will attend our sponsors’ lunch.
Program
Rick Taylor introduced our program today—Nancy Thomas, Recording Secretary of the Woman’s Club, told us about their club’s history as the oldest service organization in town, and all the things they support currently.

All are welcome as volunteers!
Help the 2018 Estes Park Duck Race Festival

Everyone knows the Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival is the place to be on the first Saturday in May. But, did you know that you do not have to be a Rotarian to help? That's right, Rotarians! You can invite your friends to help.

Make a splash! Be a Duck Race Festival volunteer this year! Invite your friends and family.

“We welcome volunteers who can give a few hours on Friday, May 4 and/or Saturday, May 5. No special skills are required except a positive attitude,” said Scott Thompson, Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival volunteer coordinator.

Thompson is looking for volunteers to help with:
  • Setting up and taking down equipment at the start and finish lines
  • Selling duck-themed race memorabilia at Bond Park and Riverside Plaza
  • Supporting operations in Bond Park for charities and organizations
  • Helping to display sponsor ducks
  • Ensuring safety along the riverbanks
  • Keeping the ducks from getting snagged in the river.
“Our 70-member club cannot put on this event without a host of volunteers. It’s a great way to help a great cause, to make new friends, and be part of one of the largest events in Estes Park,” Thompson added.

To sign up as a volunteer, contact Thompson at scott@estesparkrealestate.com or call him at 970-590-9941.
