Nicky's or Zoom? The choice is yours!

Your club is back at Nicky's! You can come to Nicky's for lunch and our meeting, or you can participate by clicking on the Zoom link to participate remotely. So, the choice of how to attend is yours.

If you're going to join the group at Nicky's you will need to R.S.V.P. to Karol at kj.rinehart@centurylink.net BEFORE 5 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 18). This will be the "drill" going forward, so remember to R.S.V.P. to Karol before Tuesday at 5 p.m. every week we meet.

Attendance at Nicky's is limited to 25, food will be served rather than a buffet, price is still $15. Those attending must have a meal. Please arrive as close to 11:30 as possible so meals can be served before the meeting begins.
Update from President Bill Solms

Last Thursday’s meeting on the 13th was attended at the same level as our meeting on the 6th; my thanks to all those of you who continue to be faithful in your on line attendance or Club participation during these trying months. I am going to schedule myself to do a dry run early this Thursday to see how to improve the quality of the program for those who are physically present at Nicky’s.  Those of you at home should have had a good quality presentation without any undue electronic interference. The problems at Nicky’s have been the lack of volume for the sound and getting a good projection of the desired person on the enlarged screen.  Scott has been a great host on line and Mike, thank you for your help at Nicky’s.

I enjoyed hearing from Wendy Rigby the new editor for the Trail Gazzette; I apologize for forgetting to award her a “piece of the rock” during the meeting as is our custom.  In trying to make up for this, I dropped by the offices of the Gazzette (across from where the Doughnut Shop used to be) only to find they are not open to the public due to Covid-19.  Wendy’s telephone number was one of those listed on their front door, so I am scheduled to drop it of off at her home in Carriage Hills on Monday morning; she does a great job for the Gazzette from her kitchen table!!  I will try to make a short video of the gift delivery so she hopefully feels appropriately honored.

We are expecting a Zoom visit from our District President, Chris Woodruff September 1st at our Board meeting and also during our regular meeting September 3d.  Chris has purchased his duck adoption online, have we done the same??

Our District Assembly will be held October 10th, 9:00 to 11:30am. Holger Knaack will be making a personal appearance at 10:00 that morning from his office in Germany. Please save the date!

This next meeting on the 20th includes a quality speaker, Michael Moon, on the future of our town and Estes Valley.  Please make a special effort to attend on line, and we will make an effort to make it worth your while.  Read our Rotary monthly magazines if you wish to solve my trivia question and add $20.00 happy dollars from my pocket! I am ahead from last week, so that means the question should be a little easier this week.  Those of you who wish to physically attend please do not forget to call Karol by Tuesday the 18th before 5 pm.

The ambiance, food, and ability to distance are all good at Nicky’s, but as I have said previously no one can guarantee Covid-19 will not be in the air at any point in our ventures into the community. Keep your guard up with the usual precautions!!

Hope to see you there or on line!
Bill Solms

This week's program
Michael Moon to define The Paradise Gap

This week's program will be broadcast on Zoom and will feature Michael Moon. His topic: The Paradise Gap in Estes Park. Tune in at Nicky's or at home. To join on Zoom, click on this link before the meeting starts at noon: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7985707369. Scott Thompson is our ZoomHost.

Moon is an active retired Estes Valley resident who arrived with his wife, Catherine, in August 2013, just in time for the 2013 flood. He has taken a lead role in researching the business rationale for why we have such a deficiency in birth through age 5 childcare in the Estes Valley. Moon led the EDC Childcare Services Committee which developed the EDC’s Childcare Needs Assessment and was instrumental in the creation of Estes ECE a 501(c)(3) focused on the creation of publicly funded early childhood education capacity within the Estes Valley.

Michael Moon

Moon is Board President of Estes Early Childhood Education, Inc (Estes ECE, Inc.), a member of the Town of Estes Park’s Family Advisory Board, active in the Early Childhood Council of Larimer County (ECCLC), and a core member of the Larimer County committee working on creating deliverable action plans for Larimer County’s 2019-2023 Strategic Goal 2, Objective 3: Childcare.

He also serves the community as a Sargent in the Estes Park Police Department’s Auxiliary, is active with the Estes Valley Model Railroaders and their annual Rails In The Rockies show and is an Elder in the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.

Moon holds BSEE and MSEE degrees from Georgia Tech and an MBA from the University of Oregon. During his career he worked for Harris Semiconductor, Storage Technology, Intel Corporation and Weyerhaeuser in roles from component and system design to global IT management.

Have you adopted your flock yet?
Duck Race is only 5 weeks away

Wondering what happened to May, June and July? Time FLEW!

And now it's time to focus our attention and energy on the 32nd Estes Park Rotary Duck Race.

Everything's happening online this year due to the global pandemic. But, never fear, Big Duck Karen Thompson and her flock are working hard to turn this challenging situation into a victory for our 67 Participating Organizations. You can be a part of the waterless Duck Race in so many ways.

Go to https://www.epduckrace.org/adopt-ducks/ and show your Rotary spirit by adopting your own duck - or better yet - a Quack Pack (Adopt 5 for your favorite organization and get one free)

Donate to the Merchant Prize Campaign so your club can show some Duck Love to our loyal merchants. Reach out to Karen Thompson at  bigduck@epduckrace.org and tell her you want to fund some Duck Bucks.

Tell your friends about this year's incredible cash and travel prizes. Here's a link to the prize list: https://www.epduckrace.org/prizes/

Send an email to your family and friends, post something on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Help spread the word. Our 67 Participating Organizations depend on you.

Remember, $19 of every Duck Adoption goes to your favorite Participating Organization. You can help your club by selecting the  #1 Organization,  Estes Park Rotary Foundation.

Offer to help the Duck Race Committee plan for the virtual race. Lots of help needed!
