The Wonder of Shelter Boxes!

Past District Governor Lee Varra-Nelson
ShelterBox began in 2000 as a Cornwall, England Rotary Club's millennium project. With the support of Rotary members and clubs around the world, ShelterBox grew to become an internationally recognized, independent disaster relief organization. Lee Varra-Nelson will teach us the benefits of ShelterBoxes.
Lee joined Rotary as a member of the Rotary Club of Fort Collins Breakfast in 2003. She recently served as our District Governor 2022-2023. Lee is a Paul Harris Fellow since 2008, a Paul Harris Society Member since 2011, a member of the Bequest Society, a Level 1 Major Donor and a Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation. Lee’s career with Hewlett-Packard spanned over 35 years and crossed many business functional areas. Lee left Hewlett-Packard to work as a Senior Technical Project Manager for Intrado, a company that supports and enhances the national 911 emergency system. She has also donated her project management expertise to Rotary for major projects and conferences. Lee and Catherine and their black Lab Molly live in Fort Collins. They have four adult children and eight grandchildren. They all enjoy spending time kayaking at the lake, hiking in the mountains and movie nights.

President Karen Thompson rang the bell at 12:02 PM. Tim Moore gave the Invocation. Karen led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Guests of Rotarians: Guy Van der Werf introduced his wife Leslie and grandson Alex. Annie Slack introduced Paula Edwards and announced that she will re-join Rotary. Karen Thompson introduced Dave Boone and Anna Weddle, who are members unable to come weekly.

Mike Connelly has offered to have us at the Esters Park Memorial Observatory as a make up for last March’s Social when the power went out.

Ben van der Werf: The Foundation Board is reinstituting the Ernie Altick Fellowship which recognizes members who have contributed $1000 or more during the year to the Foundation.

Program: Annie Slack introduced Terry Rizutti, who presented an excellent program about Veteran’s Day and his experiences as a veteran. Terry has written a book about it, The Second Tour, and copies of the newest version will be available soon. He is happy to sign copies if you come by the Legion.

Thank you for being a Bright Christmas family sponsor! Here is the information about the family you are sponsoring and info you will need to know. Your contribution to this program is invaluable and we join you in spreading the joy of Christmas through the gifts of giving and supporting families for 39 amazing years.
Please provide 4 gifts per child from the gift lists (See Below).
Put the child’s name on each gift.
Gifts should be fun and appropriate for the child’s age group.
if requested, provide winter jacket/snow boots for younger child (sizes noted)
or a gift card for older kids to choose their own.

Family “sharing gift” suggestions are noted.
If you want to include some fun basics (toothbrush, lip balm, hair ties, etc) you could do that in a stocking with the child’s name on it.

2023 Matching Charitable Donation Program
The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation is conducting a matching charitable donation program this fall to supplement donations to local non-profits. The maximum matching donation amount is $300 per member and the minimum donation amount is $50. Rotary Club of Estes Park members will be able to apply for matching donations from the Foundation between October 19 and November 16, 2023. The Foundation will be providing matching donations to any qualified 501(c)(3) organizations serving Estes Valley residents and in good standing with the Colorado Secretary of State. Please note, for those wishing to do a direct donation from your IRA account to a local non-profit, all you need to do is attach written verification of your donation to the application form. The application form is available at Rotary or by contacting Jack at his email. You can bring the application form and a check payable to the charitable organization to a weekly club meeting and deposit it in the matching charitable donation box or mail it to the Club P.O. Box identified on the form.
