Veteran Terry Rizzuti
Terry P. Rizzuti was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in 1946. He spent much of his early youth in Rome, New York, and surrounding towns before moving back to Oklahoma in 1965. He joined the Marine Corps in 1966 and served a tour in the northern I-Corps area of South Vietnam as a “grunt” from October 1966 to November 1967 assigned to the 2nd Squad, 2nd Platoon of Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division, occasionally attached to the 1st or 3rd Divisions. He was awarded the Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds received on May 2, 1967.
Rizzuti graduated with an English Literature degree from the University of Oklahoma (OU) in 1977, and then completed two years of graduate-level literature studies. He worked in various OU positions between 1980 and 1996, and helped found OU’s Vietnam Memorial Scholarship Association. He is currently a member of Flinch Forward and The 26th Marines Association, as well as a life member of The American Legion, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Disabled American Veterans, and The Khe Sanh Veterans Association.
Rizzuti proudly served two one-year terms (2016 – 2018) as Commander of American Legion Post 119 in Estes Park, Colorado, and is currently its Service Officer. He was selected for Estes Park’s Katie Speer Philanthropist of the Year Award in 2017.
Currently, Rizzuti is a writer (author mostly) living in Estes Park, Colorado. He has been published in several print and on-line journals, most notably Connecticut Review and War, Literature and the Arts. Rizzuti is best known for his novel The Second Tour, and can be contacted through his website FoodForThoughtFiction.com.
Terry will first acknowledge his mother’s birthday because November 9th was her birthday. Then he plans to shift to the subject of Veterans Day, including a little bit of its history. He will recognize any veterans in the room, as well as their families, and also the Noon Rotary members. He will say a few words about The American Legion, specifically our Post 119 and then talk a little bit about suicide prevention. Veterans are one of our nation’s potentially unifying forces during these troubling times, and they have made sacrifices that our society should appreciate and thank them for. He plans to close with a short discussion of what he thinks about on Veterans Day, including remarks about a few of his personal experiences during and post my time in Vietnam.

Doug Mann has shared that Michelle is having a difficult time. She recently had another seizure and the tumors in her brain that were radiated are swelling as they die. This swelling is causing difficulty with control and mobility of the right side of her body and right leg. Please keep Michelle and Doug in your thoughts and prayers.

Interact Club Report
Interact has finally kicked off at the Estes Park middle school for our eighth graders just a few weeks ago! We are so grateful to have a fantastic team of leaders between the two rotary clubs, along with our exchange student, Lucy! Between the first two meetings, great interest has been shown from the students and finding out what Interact is and what opportunities lie ahead for the students! The first week we mainly introduced our leader ship team, and spent time getting to know the students. The second meeting’s theme was all about Leadership! We asked the students who is one leader that they admire in life and why! We also spent time talking about different offices of leadership within Interact (i.e. President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, committees, teams, etc). We asked the students to make note of leadership traits that are qualities they believe they possess, and which of the positions for which they think they are most suited. We look forward to growing together with the students, to offering great projects and service opportunities for their participation, and to being an encouragement in their lives for good!

2023 Matching Charitable Donation Program
The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation is conducting a matching charitable donation program this fall to supplement donations to local non-profits. The maximum matching donation amount is $300 per member and the minimum donation amount is $50. Rotary Club of Estes Park members will be able to apply for matching donations from the Foundation between October 19 and November 16, 2023. The Foundation will be providing matching donations to any qualified 501(c)(3) organizations serving Estes Valley residents and in good standing with the Colorado Secretary of State. Please note, for those wishing to do a direct donation from your IRA account to a local non-profit, all you need to do is attach written verification of your donation to the application form. The application form is available at Rotary or by contacting Jack at his email. You can bring the application form and a check payable to the charitable organization to a weekly club meeting and deposit it in the matching charitable donation box or mail it to the Club P.O. Box identified on the form.
