Shoe Boxes for Children of the Dump in Nicaragua

Our club filled 35 boot size boxes at BW3 in Fairview Park on July 13th.  Our boxes will to be combined with boxes from other clubs in our District, to be shipped to the children of the dump in Nicaragua, in time for Christmas.  Jack Young, Past District Governor, is in charge of this project district wide and will be delivering the boxes to the children personally, with a team of Rotarians this December.

Bill Wagner was the chair of the event for our club. Club members and friends chose the age and gender of the child they wanted to buy for and how many boxes for each child.  It was so gratifying to know that a deserving child in Chinendega, Nicaragua will be opening a box of school supplies, clothes and toys that we personally shopped for.  It warms the heart to help a child.

Thank you Bill ,for organizing the event and getting the boxes to Jack.  We are going to strive to fill 50 boxes next year!

Our first 5K Race was a huge success!
Many thanks go out to our outgoing president, Bill Wagner, the event chair, and to all the volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to help out.
We had 185 runners, not bad for our first race.  The weather was perfect for running, cloudy and cool.
We had many positive comments from runners on how well the race was organized.  I'm sure it will only grow next year!!

See Photo Album on the left column for more photos of the event.

Message from incoming president, Lauren Teschner

It is a great honor to be serving as President for The West Shore Rotary Club for the 2017-2018 Rotary year. Rotary International has set the theme of this Rotary year as “Making a Difference,” and our club’s leadership is committed to carrying out this theme. This year, George Newman (Treasurer), Luisa Heimburger (Secretary) and Don Auble (Sargent-At-Arms) will be joining me to serve the club membership.
I truly believe all members “Make a Difference” in the club. For some members, that role involves serving as club leadership and planning, organizing and implementing the day-to-day operations of the club. For others, that role is participating in meetings and service projects. Some financially support the club, and others contribute by attending social events and fundraisers. Each type of member is vitally important to the success of the club as a whole.
This year, we will be focusing on growing our community involvement and continuing to “Make a Difference” in the areas we serve - Fairview Park, North Olmsted and West Park. Each of these communities are uniquely different and has different needs. I challenge the service chairs and membership to seek out the needs of each of these communities so we can make an impact on the citizens and community as a whole. What does that community need, and how can we as a club help fulfill that need? RYLA and Youth Challenge will continue to be important programs to the club.
We will remain supporters of international projects to “Make a Difference” globally. We will participate in financially supporting projects such as Omni and Nanzi. We will also assemble Shoe Boxes to support the children in Nicaragua.
I am humbled to be the President of this great club, and I am looking forward to a productive year making a difference both locally and globally.

Sincerely,
Lauren Teschner

Dr. John Babel Jr. Innovation Challenge Donation

Our fellow Rotarian and club member Dr. John Babel Jr. passed away on April 4th, 2016.  He left instructions that donations be made to the West Shore Rotary Foundation in lieu of flowers.  Our Foundation received $5260 in donations.  Our board decided that the memorial funds should be donated to Fairview City Schools to be used for their newly established Innovation Challenge throughout the district.

The check was presented to the school on May 2, 2017.  Louise Babel, John's wife, and daughter Donna Van Rooy (pictured on the left) were in attendance for the official presentation of the check.

The new Innovation Center at the Fairview High School was named after John to commemorate his time as superintendent of the Fairview City Schools when technology was making a huge transformation of our world.

West Shore Rotarian, Chris Gerrett organized the dinner that our club sponsored, at the Ronald McDonald House on June 29th, 2016.
Ronald McDonald House is a haven for families who's child is in a neighboring hospital.  It offers the families housing and meals for free while they concentrate on getting through their child's illness.  This is the 5th year that our club has sponsored a meal.

THANK YOU shout-out to Rotary volunteers Dan Fronczak, Chris Gerrett, George Newman and guest volunteer TJ Gerrett for making sure the dinner was on the table on time and looking good.
