Membership applications from SUSAN FIGLER and MICHAEL KOSTYACK were approved by the Board at our meeting on September 11, 2020. Please direct any comments, concerns, etc. to Linda Trevorrow, ltrevorrow@bti-cpas.com. It is our hope to induct Sue and Mike to our Club in a couple of weeks!

Susan Figler, J.D., is the Major Gifts Director for Boy Scouts of America, Great Trail Council. Sue, a Stow resident, is married to Matt and mother of four daughters, Julia, Mary, Amelia and Kate. She is very active in community groups, including the Holy Family Parish, Girl Scouts, Walsh Jesuit Athletic Team Parent Coordinator, and others. Sue is a Falls Catholic Credit Union Board Member, as well as a member in Assoc. of Fundraising Professional - NEO, Leadership Hudson 2019, Leadership Stow 2014, and the Akron and Ohio Bar Associations. Her interests include Disney, theater/musicals, walking and hiking.

Michael Kostyack is the Director of Human Resources for the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District. He lives in Seven Hills with his wife, Alaina, and is father of Arlene, Georgia and Maria. He is a member of St. Columbkille Parish, Cleveland Zoological Society, Planet Fitness Gym. Additionally, Michael is the Director of Public Relations for the Seven Hills Hall of Fame. He is a past member of the Brookpark Kiwanis. Michael enjoys exercising, watching baseball and football, rock music and spending time with family and friends.

Tom Loepp was pleased to announce the wedding of his daughter, Brittany, to Andrew Neff on September 14, 2020. Congratulations to the happy couple!!

Andy Denton announced that her daughter, Marcie, successfully completed her second round of chemotherapy for non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. She now prepares for a stem cell transplant. Here's to Marcie's return to good health!

Highlights from last week's program:

Andy Denton, our program host, explained that her happiness activity has been to get in touch with people from her past with a note or a call to let them know how they have been important to her. A wonderful happiness moment --- thank you Andy!

Andy introduced Michael Gaffney, Director of Marketing and Development at Community Support Services, an agency of the County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Service (ADM) Board. The agency provides services to those who suffer from severe and persistent mental illness.

Michael explained that a major goal of the agency is to help people have as full a life in the community as possible. Clients are offered treatment for both physical and mental illnesses, employment assistance, and unique help with housing through group homes and120 single unit apartments that are operated in cooperation with Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority. He told us about the extensive help his agency offers to homeless people who may suffer from mental illness. Since the pandemic, CSSBH has had community volunteers pack 30 lunches each weekday for needy persons who cannot obtain food from other, now closed sources. Anyone interested can go to cssbh.org and find a link to assist with this service.

Michael also explained that people who have persistent mental illness tend to die an average of 24 years sooner than the average population. A high percentage of these persons report smoking and substance abuse, as well as a lack of good physical health care. To address that need, Community Support Services opened a physical healthcare clinic to offer medical services along with mental health care services. The clinic is open to the general public in the University Park area.

Art Therapy has become an important and unique part of CSS' overall wellness/treatment program. For the past several years, the agency has hosted "Art of Recovery" where artwork created by those who use services was on display and available for sale. This year the show pivoted to an on-line auction because of the pandemic and 51 of the 58 works of art were sold. The artist receives 75% of the selling price; the remaining 25% helps to support the art therapy program.
