Happy Bucks!

Bob and Annette Oborn were pleased to let us know that Patrick, their son, has been sober for 500 days!  Such wonderful news!

Sue Figler reported that her high school girls and her college girls are all back in school, face to face.  Yes!!

Linda Trevorrow thanked everyone in the club for their participation in our holiday projects.  The Salvation Army Bell Ringing Program and the Holiday Helping Hands Project were VERY well received by our local community!!

Mary Dula said that she was glad to say goodbye to 2020.  We all agreed with Mary!!

Highlights from last week's meeting:

Our host, Tom Loepp, told us that he attempted to spread happiness at a recent Indiana University football game in Florida.  During the game two Ohio State fans were shown on the Jumbotron wearing Ohio State garb.  Tom proceeded to text security suggesting that the offenders be removed from the stadium.  He brought happiness to the fans around him who were entertained by his exchanges with security.  Tom should be fined for his unsportsmanlike conduct!!

Tom introduced Ali Miller and Chris Meyers from Playhouse Square.  They were happy to share their COVID pivots, and other pandemic changes and challenges endured during the past several months.

Chris began by telling us that Jesus Christ Superstar had opened just before government officials 'closed' entertainment venues and programs.  Uncertainty was a constant bother, as the Playhouse Square management had no idea how long 'closed' would last ... weeks, months, years?  Eventually the season was postponed until Fall 2021, resulting in the cancellation of more than 800 curtains --- to the tune of millions in lost sales.  School field trips to Playhouse Square were also cancelled.  However, creative people have since made arrangements for virtual field trips for the students!  1,800 classrooms have signed up for the virtual programs!

Chris discussed the complications of cancellations.  For example, it takes 23 semi trucks of equipment to create the traveling version of Lion King.  The drivers of those trucks come from all over the country and were told to take their semis and go home. Imagine finding the sets in pieces/parts in 23 farflung places!!  UGH!! Performances are scheduled to resume later in 2021.  Plans call for 'blockbusters' such as Lion King and Wicked to present initially, followed by the shows already on the schedule.  The brand new shows just out of Broadway will be touring last.  The Playhouse Square staff is watching theaters around the world to see how they are handling their returns to productions.

Ali talked with us about their 'Interlude Project', a fundraising attempt to help the organization and its personnel manage their financial losses.  Some grants have helped, but they are still experiencing major economic shortfalls.  Go to www.clevelandplayhouse.com to find out how to support the group during these difficult times.

Chris also explained that there have been [non-COVID] sensory adapted shows for families who need the accommodations for their loved ones.  The lights are less bright, the sound is reduced and families are able to bring items such as ipads to help patrons appreciate and enjoy the performances.  Playhouse Square has modified past shows for Lion King and plans to do so for future Frozen shows.

Look for announcements of the new schedule which will coincide with the 100th anniversary of Playhouse Square.  We all look forward to sharing LIVE entertainment with each other -- shoulder to shoulder -- SOON!  Let's hope for FULL houses and FULL runs!!

Hosts --- Please invite your speakers to learn more about Rotary!  Carrie, thank YOU for keeping everyone 'in the loop'.
