    JOIN OUR MEETINGS!!
           WE HAVE FUN!!

Linda Trevorrow introduced Greg Ervin, whose career in public health in Ohio has spanned 40+ years.  He is a member of the Jackson Rotary and Asst. Dist. Governor of District 6690, which is in south central Ohio.  He spoke about the current Covid-19 crisis, agreeing with experts that there has been nothing like this since the pandemic of 1918-19 (which formed the basis of public health in Ohio).

He listed 10 things which we should strongly consider as ways to survive this disease.  1.Wear masks; 2. Socially distance by staying 6 feet apart from one another; 3. Wash your hands often for 20 seconds, or use a hand sanitizer that has a 60% alcohol base; 4. Avoid physical contact such as handshakes or hugs; 5. Cover your mouth and nose if you sneeze, either with a tissue or using the inside of your elbow; 6. Clean and disinfect items you touch often and avoid touching door knobs or stair rails; 7. Use stairs rather than an elevator because a closed environment is dangerous; 8. Avoid large gatherings.  Stay outside if you are with others; 9. Use hand sanitizer wipes on surfaces like ATMs; 10. Be careful when you dine out (preferably outside), or visit a salon and/or barber. Learn about the precautions the business is employing to keep employees and guests/customers/clients SAFE.

Greg feels that a second wave of the virus is very likely to occur in the fall.  It will not go away until there is a widely available, trustworthy vaccine.  Be sure to stay informed.  What you read in newspapers is probably more reliable than 24-hour cable news sources.  Greg praised Dr. Amy Acton for her leadership in Ohio and her no-nonsense approach for curbing the virus.  He says she has a real understanding about protecting citizens from the dangers of the virus.  About 40% of the deaths in Ohio have occurred in extended care facilities and not in our general public because of the precautions that we have taken as a state.  Italy, Spain and South Korea experienced disastrous complications with the virus, but have managed to control it (currently!).  Greg said those countries' national rules re:  stay at home orders and other preventative measures were more effective than the disjointed states' efforts in the US.  States are really in charge of many, many rules governing our everyday lives.  Aren't you glad you live in Ohio?!

Mark Ferguson was in charge of our joke last week.  He shared the story of a teacher and student doing a math problem about cats.  The student taught the teacher how to count!!!  Mark --- thank you for your great joke!  We all enjoyed a laugh!!

John Pribonic was handed the responsibility of the joke for next week.  It better be a good one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
