Sue Figler is grateful for her children's attendance at school every day.

Linda Trevorrow is always pleased to see so many smiling faces at each week's meeting.  Thank you, one and all!

Highlights from last week's program:

Steve Dunton, last week's program host, was pleased to share his Happiness Moment with all of us.  He often helps a retired friend with things around his house, such as leaf raking and cleaning out his gutters.  Steve's friendship surely warms the heart of his friend.  Steve, you are a fine Rotarian!

Steve introduced Elena Bell, the Manager of Public Relations and Marketing for the Akron Zoo.  She is a proud graduate of Kent State University and a resident of Barberton.

Elena told us that the zoo has been completely rebuilt since 2000, thanks to the passage of a county tax levy --- the first ever.  Over 250 animal species and 1,000 animals call the Zoo home.  The Pride of Africa exhibit is the most recent animal area to open to the public. The zoo staff is heavily involved in education.  91,456 individuals, including over 35,000 students from 81 school districts, were reached by zoo education efforts during 2019.

The zoo is a leader in conservation efforts and sustainable practices, winning a National AZA Green Award for its efforts. The Akron Zoo family has helped to save 46 endangered species.  We can be proud of our local zoo; it is one of 237 accredited zoos in the country, out of thousands of licensed zoos.  The Wild Asia Exhibit is set to open in the Spring of 2021.

During COVID the zoo broadcasts live on Facebook, hosts free meal distributions, hosted a Red Cross blood drive, made 1,400 N95 masks available to healthcare providers, and made and distributed over 3,000 masks.  Whew ... energy abounds at the Zoo!!

Issue 47 is on the ballot in November (first request for new money in 20 years).  If passed, the levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $2.92 per month.  The animals, their keepers, and the zoo's guests surely appreciate our support.  The zoo gives back to the community, in thanks for levy support, by making continued improvements at the zoo, offering free admission for every household in Summit County on select days, and discovering ways to create and support educational programming for everyone.  Each dollar of levy support generates $8 in impact for the local economy.  Our tax dollars are well spent!

We were introduced to Elena's co-worker, Kate.  Kate entertained us with her friend, a lovely male boa snake, weighing about 5 pounds.  Female boas of his species can weigh up to 35 pounds.  No snickers!!

Elena, we thank you for spending time with us.
