Happy Bucks!

Bob Sweitzer has been VERY busy during October --- birthdays, weddings, family celebrations.  Thank you Bob for sharing Happy Bucks throughout the ENTIRE month of October!

A message from Holger Knaack, Rotary International President:  "To all of our Rotary members: Thank you for your continued support and dedication, which has made possible the certification of the WHO African region as free of the wild poliovirus.  We know this hasn't been easy, and there is still work to be done, but you have helped achieve something remarkable."  While we celebrate this great achievement, we look to the next goal: to eradicate the wild poliovirus in the two countries where the disease has never been stopped, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Highlights from last week's program:

Our program host, Christine Faranda, shared a story about her friend who lives out-of-town and is dealing with progressive blindness due to macular degeneration.  She struggles with her inability to work and drive.  Christine was able to make contact with a volunteer organization near her friend that now delivers food twice a week to her special friend.  Both Christine and her friend are grateful.  Thank you Christine for sharing your friendship story with us!

Christine introduced speaker Matt Pallo, an Edward Jones advisor in Stow.  Matt is an active member in several of our local service organizations.  In addition to helping people make smart decisions about their finances, he holds a PharmD degree.  A resident of Hudson, Matt is also active with his local church, St. Mary.

Matt began his talk by encouraging everyone to get three shots:  flu, pneumonia and shingles.  His first career prepared him for giving advice in his second career.  Similarly, we must also prepare ourselves for a healthy, financially secure future.

He talked with us about preparing for the unexpected with these questions:  Where am I?  Where would I like to be?  How can I get there? and How can I stay on track?  In order to prepare for the unexpected he suggested that we have a 3-6 month cash emergency fund.  The fund should be extended to 12 months if retirement is on the horizon.  He said that a line of credit is a good second line of defense.  Matt also said that homeowners' and renters' insurance are necessary items in preparing for a secure future.  Coverage should be reviewed every 3-5 years.  It is important that we understand what is covered and, more importantly, what is NOT covered.

He discussed how our tolerance for risk should dictate how much of our portfolio is invested in fixed income vs. stock market investments.  Potential medical expenses should be part of our plan.  Before age 65 (medicare age!), it is wise to set aside $10,000 to $12,000 per year to manage our 'senior' medical costs.  Once eligible for Medicare, it cannot hurt to investigate the pros and cons of long term care insurance and other appropriate riders on insurance policies.  Regarding life insurance, Matt suggests that term insurance is the most cost effective for people who are still working.  As for the death benefit: think of the LIFE acronym ... Liabilities, Income, Final expenses and Education.    Long term planning subjects include inheritance/legacy objectives, gifts to charity, long-term care plans and other specific goals.

Matt, we thank you for spending time with us and sharing some helpful financial planning tips.  The basics almost always bear repeating!
