Co-president Brad Ruth opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by an invocation about appreciation and thankfulness by program host, Carrie Leising.
CELEBRATIONS:
Birthdays: Brad Jagger will celebrate his birthday on June 14. We sang well to him today.
Wedding Anniversaries: Chip and Elizabeth Eaken will celebrate 27 years of marriage on June 10 and J.T. and Kathleen Stimler will celebrate 41 years on June 13.
50/50 Drawing: Dave Christman's table had the winning ticket but drew the 10 of spades.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Golf Outing: Brad expressed appreciation to Scott Miller for the great job in heading the golf outing. Scott thanked the committee, his volunteers, the donors, the sponsors and the golfers for making it a great day. He said that all of the bills are not yet in, but that the profits should be around $11,000. Scott completed this task as a new member but received his blue badge today.
Foodbank: Mary Dula informed us that we will not be doing the Foodbank in July.
Budget Committee: Annette Oborn said that the Budget Committee will meet on Monday. If you have items you want to have included in the budget for next year, let her know before Monday at 330-813-2059.
Interact: Dinah Henderson, Interact Advisor, said that the Memorial Garden clean-up at the high school; will now be Saturday, June 18 from 9:00-11:00. She said to pull into the front of the high school and follow the gravel road to the garden. They need weed whackers and will be doing weeding and trimming.
She also said that the group will be working with Rotary for the Fourth of July Parade float and that we will be making several thousand pom poms. Distribution of kits started this morning to Rotarians.
Stuff the Bus: Carrie Leising told us to save the dates of August 5, 6 and 7 for this year's Stuff the Bus Project. Rotary will partner with many community agencies to stock the cupboard. The actual Teacher Supply Cupboard will now be managed by Club Interact .
Board Meeting: The board will meet this Friday morning, June 10 at 7:15 a.m. at City Hall. Board members are expected to be present but others are welcome. The minutes of the April meeting are attached to these minutes because there was not a quorum for the May meeting.
City Proclamation Mayor Pribonic of the City of Stow read a proclamation recognizing the work of Rotary and Club Interact of Stow Munroe Falls High School for their work with The Akron-Canton Foodbank. 31 volunteers gave 135 volunteer hours which resulted in the club and Interact being named the Foodbank's Volunteer Organization of the Year. Dave Renninger initiated this effort and Mary Dula and Dinah Henderson have continued the work Dave started. This morning 9 students from Interact were with us to join in receiving the award. Ayanna Jefferson was recognized for having been present every week.
PROGRAM:
Carrie Leising, Program Host introduced Mary Lou L'Hommedieu whose law firm serves people involved with healthcare providers, long-term care, nursing homes, hospice, assisted living and rehabilitation.....basically any time a person has need for a home away from home.
She explained that a major tool when looking into such a facility is word of mouth from others. That is a valuable tool. In addition The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) requires person centered care with regard to details like food, language, sleep patterns and ethnic practices. They made a point that what is important to the person using services should be important to the facility.
She said that anyone can go to Medicare.gov and click on the nursing home link. That gives a rating based on data from billing, health inspections, individual care plans and things like food waste and accusations of abuse. The highest rating is five stars.The star system looks at quality measures, health care inspections and staffing. Concerns in any of the areas will lower the rating.
A major concern is the number of baby boomers who are reaching that point where assistance will be needed. This is a difficult decision for all involved, so it is important to check ratings, interview staff and look at who owns the facility. It is important that families look for a home-type environment for their family member. She stressed that most facilities care deeply for those they serve.
JOKE: Annette Oborn had a couple of good jokes for us this morning. One fit with the day's topic. Why did the nurse carry a red pen at work? In case she had to draw blood.
