So glad we are having a nice spring dayangryThe only problem is that someone forgot to tell Mother Nature that we are finished with winter.  But, in spite of the weather, we had a good showing from our Rotarians.

After President, Brad Jagger opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, Amber Zibritosky led us in the invocation.

Carrie Leising was our announcer and began by thanking Steve Dunton and Dave Renninger for getting us all checked in.  She welcomed our guests who were winners of the Four-Way-Speech contest, their parents and Sue Theisen, coach of the speech activities at the high school.

CELEBRATIONS:
Birthdays:  Elizabeth Eaken and Jeff Film both have birthdays this week.  Annette Oborn led us in singing to Elizabeth.

DRAWING:  Ray Evans' table had the winning card, but drew the six of hearts.

HAPPY BUCK:  Dave reminded us to get our tickets for the Stow-Munroe Falls Library's Dessert Extravaganza which will be held on Thursday, April 19 at Roses Run.  He promises get the ticket to you if you give him your $50.00.  Only 150 tickets will be sold.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Annie Hanson reminded us of the Community Showcase which will be on Saturday, April 7 and Sunday, April 8 at the high school.  She still has a few open slots for volunteers for the Rotary booth and passed a clipboard around so we could sign up.

Bob Oborn asked us to save the date for Tuesday evening April 17.  This will be the time that we honor our Interact students and their parents at Silver Lake.  Later this week, Bob will send the club more information about the event.  Watch for it.

Programs:  If you are in charge of recruiting an upcoming speaker, let Roger Cline and Andy Denton know the topic so that the information can be part of Clubrunner and also the newsletter.  Information about who is responsible for the various dates was listed in the board minutes which were attached to last week's newsletter.  That has also been posted on Clubrunner.

PROGRAM:
Amber welcomed the students who took the top three places in the Four-Way Speech contest.  To enter the contest, students choose a topic of interest to them and apply the Rotary Four-Way Test to justify their opinion. The first place winner from each school goes to the district contest on April 7.

Brady McPherson, who is a freshman, gave his speech about the demands of high school and college sports.  His concern is the amount of time that the sports activities take, often at the expense of studying, sleep or time with family and friends.  He was the third place winner and plans on college and the military, with his eyes on Princeton.

Mariah Sanderson, a junior, who wants to go into the medical field talked with us about the power of hurtful words, based on her fascination with Barney, the dinosaur, when she was a child.  She shared with us how words like "creepy" and "ugly" can take away a person's innocence.  She placed second in our competition.

Kayla Flake, our first place winner, also happened to place first last year and then went on to place in the top five at the district level.  She is a sophomore planning on college after graduation.  She used the topic of lying and applied the Four-Way-Test to that, and gave us all something to think about.

Sue Thieson, the coach of the speech and debate program shared information with us as to the cost of the competitions.  When people qualify for state or national competition, the cost can go well over $1000 per student.  Therefore the students are continually looking for money to help fund their efforts.  She thanked the Stow-Munroe Falls Rotary for their $500 donation again this year toward the team.  Incidentially, Amy Jagger, daughter of Brad and Kirsten,  was the winner of this year's state speech competition.
