Wednesday, November 4 at 6:00 p.m. Saint Elias Banquet Centre 750 Ridgewood Avenue, Ottawa
Join RI Past Vice President Valarie Wafer, Co-Chair of the International PolioPlus Committee, for an evening celebrating Rotary’s polio eradication work and the impact of The Rotary Foundation.
Tickets are $75 until October 1 and $95 afterward. Chicken and vegetarian dinner options are available. Proceeds support polio eradication and The Rotary Foundation.
As World Polio Day approaches, here is a look at how the situation has changed over the decades.
1980
Polio was still widespread in many parts of the world. Routine vaccination was expanding, but millions of children remained at risk.
1990
The global eradication effort was under way. At its launch in 1988, polio had been estimated to paralyse 350,000 children a year across more than 125 endemic countries.
2000
Reported global cases had fallen to 2,857. The Western Pacific became the second WHO region certified polio-free, following the Americas.
Now
Wild poliovirus remains endemic in just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. As of 23 September 2026, they had reported 36 wild polio cases this year. Vaccine-derived outbreaks in other countries also require continued vaccination and surveillance.
On World Polio Day, 24 October, we can celebrate this progress and help protect the children still at risk. A gift to Rotary’s PolioPlus Fund supports the work needed to end polio for good.
