Over 60 years ago, three Rotarians: a businessman, a school administrator, and a high school teacher, felt that students at Bedford High School who excelled in vocational education should be honored for their achievements. Outstanding students were being honored in academics and athletics, but not those in what was then known as Vocational Education. The club quickly agreed to sponsor such a recognition, and local business and industries were asked to sponsor these awards. Students were invited to a regular Rotary noon meeting of the club to receive Rotary’s congratulations. The three gentlemen thought it appropriate to recognize these students for their hard work. The Rotarians were Bunny Raimier (businessman), Ernie Petrelli (teacher), and Warren Miller (principal), of Bedford High School.
From that humble beginning, the program has grown. The individuals have changed, the name of the program has changed, the size of the banquet has grown to include parents, teachers, and administrators, but the basic foundation of cooperation between local businesses, schools, and students lives on. Over the years, hundreds of students have been recognized in front of their teachers, parents, and the community for their outstanding achievements. The Bedford Rotary Club is proud to have been the sponsor of these recognition dinners for so many years and congratulates all the award recipients. Thank you for being part of this important program!
