( July 7, 2010) What a difference a week makes. With renewed energy and spirit, GARDEN STATE ROTARY is moving forward with a TEAM of Board Members and organization of Committees that will insure a robust year of Service Above Self. Get to know them and take hold of what they bring to the Club this year.
President Elect Joe will lead CLUB SERVICE. All committees will benefit from his leadership including our web presence, PR, Hospitality-Good News, AS THE WHEEL TURNS, Fellowship, and Fundraising. Vice President Joel has taken on the ambitious task of COMMUNITY SERVICE with the talented assistance of Jeff Leason, Pete Lance, Deb Myerson and Liz Segal. They will spearhead the projects that will signature our leadership in volunteerism that welcomes your participation.
Our "stand by's" that keep us on track include Secretary Bob Hardin, Treasurer Tony Greenfield, Historian Marv Axler, Legal Advisor Jeff Schnepper and Member at Large Paul Adler. Joining them will be Gina Cerrone coordinating VOCATIONAL SERVICE as it take on expanded meaning by showcasing the Club in different venues, including community outreach and networking.
The true spirit of GSR will shine through our MEMBERSHIP team of Bob Rank and Michelle Moken, representing the best of "what's old and new".such a team! We almost forgot - YOU! You are our best source for new member referrals.
Last but not least, Barbara Schnepper will be at the helm of the GARDEN STATE ROTARY FOUNDATION. Creative entrepreneurship, a strong sense of community and the wisdom to carry it through will be her benchmarks. A year from now when a new Board is installed, it will have the benefit of solidarity and commitment to leadership as we collectively achieve Service Above Self.
Remember the first Friday of each month will be CLUB ASSEMBLY - the forum for all members; not just committee chairs to express their opinions and impact the Club with ideas and actions.
As the Wheel Turns
You will never achieve a true sense of the value and impact of membership in Garden State until you become a part of it. Eating lunch at Ponzio's on Friday does not make a Rotarian. Knowing what is going on, who is a part of it, and what's important to them, connects us and ultimately brings us closer to Service above Self. For those reasons, ATWT will keep you connect and committed.

Why Does It Seem That Some of Us
Are "Addicted" To Rotary?
- We understand and practice its mission
- It has taken us to places and with people we never dreamed of
- We actually made a lasting difference in the lives of people of all ages
- We've turned members into lasting and trusted friends
During the coming months, FDG Tom Veevers and ADG Dave Zelley will not only open our eyes, but our minds as to why Rotary is the most effective service organization in the world. It's because of people like you, waiting to become Rotarized.
News FLASH
OUT OF SIGHT.NOT OUT OF GARDEN STATE ROTARY
(August 24, 2010) TEAM SEGAL led by our own LIZZIE and son JACOB along with his friends, once again came out to represent GSR at TFT Miniature Golf Outing. Yes, we sponsored a hole. Check writing isn't Service..Believe it or not, participating and having fun while supporting one of our most strategic partners is.
Last comment heard as Lizzie exited the course ~ Tiger, you'd better watch out. Lizzie has a great swing and a bolder heart.
A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... And YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.
A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopene and are indeed pure heart and blood food
Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.
A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.
Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.
Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.
Avocadoes, Eggplant and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).
Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of Sperm as well to overcome male sterility.
Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.
Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries
Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.
Onions look like the body's cells. Today's research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes. A working companion,
Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body.

Our Jimmy Horowitz always reminds us that MEMBERSHIP is the foundation of GSR. Getting the word out about who were are and what we accomplish is the best way to attract and engage new members and retain them. Marilyn and Marv Axler agree. Through their efforts, GSR will be featured on the front page of the September 12 edition of MyCommunityTREND. This insert is valued at $400, and would not have happened without Marilyn's persistence and relationship with the Trend. Following is a copy of the article we should all read.
Across America and around the world, people entering a community, town or city are welcomed by the sign of a "wheel" indicating that ROTARY INTERNATIONAL plays a vital role there and when and where it meets. ROTARY, the world's largest humanitarian organization, provides aid and relief to millions of people. Most of us know of ROTARY because of its international endeavors including the eradication of Polio, and providing emergency housing with Shelter Boxes for people who have lost their homes due I catastrophes such as in Haiti and Chile. Rotary's response to Katrina revealed the power and strength of local Rotary Clubs to become first and sustaining responders.
Since 1955, ROTARY's presence in Cherry Hill enabled the community to benefit from initiatives in all aspects of community service. In 1976, a second club named Garden State Rotary of Cherry Hill was formed, Garden State Rotary which meets on Friday's at 12:15PM and the dinner club which meets on Mondays at 6:15 PM fulfill Rotary's mission ~ "Service Above Self", here and around the world. Both clubs meet at Ponzio's Restaurant in Cherry Hill.
GARDEN STATE ROTARY is conducting its Fall Membership Campaign. It is seeking out community committed professionals and businesspersons, who are looking to meet, share and collaborate in community service and volunteerism. You only need to drive down Evesham Road after school or weekends to watch what has become a generation of children using and enjoying the Garden State Rotary Sports Complex. The park on Chapel Avenue at the Garden State Rotary Gazebo lets parents and grandparents spend play time with their families and adjoining play area. In cooperation with the Garden State Rotary Club, the Rotary Interact Club at Cherry Hill High School West members work to better the local community by volunteering their time and energy. Their efforts may be seen in various food and clothing drives, charity walks and fundraisers. Their school or civic service projects like Pedals for Progress, Christmas presents for needy families, clothing collection to fund the elimination of landmines, and prom dress collection for girls in inner-city schools help many around the world. One of the goals of Rotary is to help young adults discover their leadership potential and develop confidence to achieve their aspirations. To accomplish that goal. Rotary clubs have prepared thousands of young leaders though the RYLA program each year. RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) events are organized by local Rotarians who are business and professional achievers. This 5 day leadership event at Stockton State College is for high school juniors. There is no cost to participants. In 2010 Garden State Rotary sponsored 17 students from public and private schools in Cherry Hill Township. Our students return to the community and replay how this experience has changed their lives in a positive way. We also offer exchange scholarships for high school students, 151/2-18 1/2 years of age, who are interested in studying for a full year in a foreign country. Last year's club incoming student was from Guadalajara, Mexico. We also offer scholarships to graduating Cherry Hill high school students and through the Rotary Foundation, we sponsor Foreign Ambassadorial graduate school scholarships. The challenge of hunger is an integral part of Garden State Rotary's ongoing agenda of community service that includes relationships with the Cherry Hill Food and Outreach Council and the Food Bank of South Jersey Strike out Hunger, held annually in partnership with the Phillies, brings together Rotarians from three states including South Jersey, Delaware and Eastern Pennsylvania for fellowship, food collection and fundraising. Coordinated by Garden State's Marv Axler, over $750,000 has been raised. These funds are also being matched by the Melinda and William Gates Foundation to inoculate against Polio Worldwide.
More than ever, Garden State Rotarians are responding to the needs of our returning and senior veterans. Issues of homelessness, lack of jobs, the need for clothing and supporting their families is on the top of our "do list" for this year. We look forward to volunteering at Holiday time and assisting at this Memorial Day's "Grand Prix Race" and Operation Stand Down benefiting our Wounded Warriors.
This year, we look forward to joint fundraising opportunities with the Cherry Hill Education Foundation in support of our schools and community. This reciprocal relationship will also enable us to build an enduring partnership that will not only sustain, but create new initiatives that will extend Cherry Hill's reputation as being one of the "best of the best" school districts.
What initially began as hosting a holiday party for hospitalized children evolved into refurbishing a family suite at the Ronald McDonald House at Cooper Hospital. Beyond the scholarships, leadership institutes and Ambassadorial programs and study exchanges, Garden State Rotary has worked hard in our local community. We provide hundreds of needy families with Thanksgiving turkeys and all the fixings each Thanksgiving.
Whether it is hosting holiday parties for hospitalized children or working with students through Rotary's high school Interact, Garden State has remained steadfast in its commitment to Cherry Hill. The list of accomplishments should go on and on, but for the first time in decades organizations including Rotary are faced with attrition in service and volunteerism. There are those of us who blame it on the economy. Others suggest it is the distraction of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some say that time is our adversary - the time needed for work, school, and family.
Garden State Rotary believes it is a matter of awareness ~ letting our business and professional colleagues know that they are still wanted and needed to sustain, preserve and build upon the highest commitment of all ~ Service Above Self. If you are looking for a venue to share your skills, knowledge, abilities and sense of humor, in the company of people such as yourself, please be our guest for lunch any Friday at 12:15PM at Ponzio's on Route 70. Contact Michele Moken at 856.722.8813 and discover the difference one more Rotarian can make.
Confessions of a Jewish Mother: How My Son Ruined My Life!
This is priceless. It's 7 minutes and 11 seconds long.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRbL46mWx9w
Jewish mother jokes The Harvard School of Medicine did a study of why Jewish women like Chinese food so much. The study revealed it is due to the fact that WonTon spelled backwards is "Not Now". There's a big controversy on the Jewish view of exactly when life begins. In Jewish tradition, the fetus is not considered viable until after it graduates from medical school. Q: Why don't Jewish
mothers drink? Q: Have you seen the
newest Jewish-American Princess horror movie? Q: Why do Jewish
Mothers make great parole officers? Q: What's a Jewish
American Princess's favorite position? When the doctor called Mrs. Liebermann to tell her that her check came back, she replied, "So did my arthritis." A man calls his mother in Florida. "Mom, how are you?" "Not too good," says the mother. "I've been very weak." The son says, "Why are you so weak?" She says, "Because I haven't eaten in 5 days." The man says, "That's terrible! Why haven't you eaten in 5 days? The mother answers, "Because I didn't want my mouth to be filled with food if you should call." A Jewish boy comes home from school and tells his mother he's been given a part in the school play. "Wonderful. What part is it?" The boy says, "I play the part of the Jewish husband." The mother scowls and says, "Go back and tell the teacher you want a speaking part." Q - Where does a
Jewish husband hide money from his wife? Q - How many Jewish
mothers does it take to change a light bulb? Short summary of every Jewish Holiday: They tried to kill us, we won, so let's eat. Did you hear about the bum who walked up to the Jewish mother on the street and said, "Lady, I haven't eaten in three days." "Force yourself," she replied. Q: What's the
difference between a Rottweiler and a Jewish Mother? A young Jewish man calls his mother and says, "Mom, I'm bringing home a wonderful woman I want to marry. She's a Native American and her name is Shooting Star." "How nice," says his mother. "And I have an Indian name too," he says. "It's 'Running Deer' and I want you to call me that from now on." "How nice," says his mother. "You should have an Indian name too, Mom," he says. "I already do," says the mother. "You can call me Sitting Shiva." Jewish telegram: "Begin worrying. Details follow." = |
What Will You
REMEMBER?
µ Where were you? Who were you with? What were you
doing?
µ What was your first reaction?
µ What did you do next?
µ As the full impact of what happened occurred, who or what did you reach out to?
µ How has 9.11 changed your life, your friends' and family's?
µ What is the best way to remember 9.11?
µ What should you remember to tell your children, their children, and the people who matter most to you ten years from now?
What would we do if one day Marv, Jimmy, Mike, and some of our other constant keepers were gone? What would happen to Garden State Rotary of Cherry Hill?
Believe it or not, it will happen. GSR isn't about individuals coming or going. It is about LEADERSHIP. It's about continuity and longevity. It's about YOU. It's about US. October 8th, the Leadership Institute is being held at the Wyndam on Route 73.
The Board wants to invest in YOU because you are our FUTURE. We have two spots left. Registration is closing. Let Joes know ASAP. The Club picks up the tab. YOU extend your LEADERSHIP SKILLS and pick up the knowledge. One day, someone may ask, "Do you remember µ?" I sincerely hope it is YOUR name they remember because YOU were a constant keeper.
Each one of us, in our own way, can do something to support and nurture the Club. I do the newsletter in an attempt to interest prospective members as well as put a smile - even a question mark on your faces. I'll believe I'll have done a credible job when your by-line is there as well as mine. We all have something to share. Let it be your turn. Send your op-ed, letter, or joke to tobykoch2@comcast.net.
GSR HELPING BUILD JAKE'S PLACE THIS SUNDAY 9-26 ~ 1-4PM
This Sunday, the Challenge Grove Park will be the site of TOUCH A TRUCK off of Brace Road. Volunteers are still needed to assist kids access over thirty vehicles, including fire trucks, emergency vehicles, construction trucks, classic cars, tractors, big rigs, an official NASCAR racing car featuring "Chocolate" Myers, and a BIG BIG CRANE
Moon Bounce, a Petting Zoo, Face Painting, the Discovery Museum Bubble and live music by the Paisley Pickles will be included in the admission. Balloon animals will also be available.
RAFFLE TICKETS sold by GSR'S own" raffle maven", Toby Koch, and "silent auctions" for gift baskets will also be available on site. Great food and beverages will be available with each volunteer getting a food allowance.
WHICH GARDEN STATE DO YOU BELONG TO?
(October 1, 2010) "What did you ask me?" is the response I got to my headline question this past weekend as GSR's Committee Service Committee went into action in support of Build Jake's Place. Yes! GSR's team did exactly that. Between selling tickets, collecting money, doing whatever else they were asked to do, reminded me of the "Garden State glory days" when more of our members participated than did not.
Absolutely, let's give a Rotary "well done" to an outstanding team of volunteers who gave up their Sunday, their football games, and whatever else they could have done ~ but they were there. Being there is what distinguishes one service group from the rest. For some of us, being there meant just writing a check. The checks seem fewer and far between. Certainly, the "economy" has seen to that. For others.it means coming for lunch and occasionally buying a fifty- fifty or announcing a happy dollar. Does it seem as though you sit with and talk to the same people every week? Does that describe your membership?
Not you? Are Charter Night and the Holiday Party the "high points" of your year? When was the last time you said, "count me in" when asked to work alongside of other GSR members? Having lived in hi-rise buildings just about all of my life, I haven't done much with landscaping. I do know there is a time when bushes get pruned or trimmed, getting them ready to flourish again. As your president, the last three months have made me feel that GSR is very much like one of those bushes. After last year's somewhat of a "dry season", we've cleared away the debris, turned our soil when needed, prayed for the" rain of volunteerism" and crossed our fingers. Instead of that, we should be joining hands and minds while creating a bountiful garden of Service Above Self.
Which Garden State do you belong to? If it's GARDEN STATE ROTARY ~ we have a lot to get done. Without YOU, it won't be the same.
SOME PEOPLE DO THE TALK ..
JEFF LEASON WILL DO THE WALK
Recently another member inquired, "What did you mean when you called Jimmy, Mike, and Marvin "constant keepers?" Throughout its history GSR has had several members who have done whatever it took to keep the Club "running". In this next generation of GSR members we have another one, a quiet champion ~ JEFF LEASON. Leading a team that will be making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Jeff has once again demonstrated what being a Garden State Rotarian is all about .Service Above Self. Last Sunday, Jeff spent the entire day helping out at Build Jake's Place. More than an active member on our Community Service Team, he represents the caliber of young leadership that will keep GSR in the forefront of caring and concern for Cherry Hill and beyond.
When Jeff asked if he could reach out to members of the Club to support him in "his run", I immediately said YES. The loss of a breast to cancer is horrific - the loss of a life is devastating to everyone close to that individual. As your president, I am asking you to join with me by making a donation in SUPPORT OF JEFF. For as little as 10 cents a week, excluding two weeks' vacation, you can replace the $5 dollars you've shared. For 20 cents...For 20 cents a week ..etc. Join with me next week ~ cash or check and help to make this the last best race.
Reaching Out For A
PLACE CALLED FAITH
(October 8, 2010) In the past few weeks there are members who have encountered a back draft of personal and family challenges. For Tony Greenfield, his mother is transitioning to the next chapter of her life. Barbara Shnepper's mom is also not well. My favorite Rotary "foot soldier", Joe Eisberg, is struggling to stand for extended periods of time, as I do. Last week, Janice Rank's mother past away as did Rochelle Adler's father; followed by Donna Eisberg's brother this week. Just as I was "coming up for air", I found out that Bob is facing another round in his health battle, followed by my Tony who is scheduled for surgery on the 28th. These are only the members, families and friends we know about.
Why am I bothering to tell you this? It can be very lonely... sometimes frightening when serious illness or the loss of a family member strikes. Many of us become consumed with fear and doubt - even Guilt. When my Tony was first diagnosed with deadly melanoma we were stunned. Then we both migrated separately into the dominion of fear and depression. At times it was very lonely for each of US- even though we were in the same room.
Tony and I needed something to hold us together; not people telling us "how sorry" or "he'll be fine".then followed by - "Sh-t, that melanoma can kill you" ! I knew we need to get to a better place if we were to overcome our fear. That place is the place called Faith. As I spent the first long day in the hospital, these words came to me. It has guided me through his and my challenges. Now I share them with any of you who are traveling that same road. Let it not only provide comfort, but strength enough to share when others need it.
What Faith Doesn't Do
Faith doesn't let you climb mountains,
Cross rivers or fly so high as to reach the sky.
It is something that is given to you after
You accept that each day is a gift to be treasured.
Faith doesn't give you any answers;
Just questions that often go unheard..
It is something we can't explain at first,
But think of last when all seems lost.
Faith doesn't let you find blame in others.
It allows us to look at how we blame ourselves;
Forgiving others as we should forgive ourselves..
It is the true testament that comes from Hope.
Faith doesn't allow us to stay down when we have fallen.
It has been said many times that God helps those who help themselves.
Too often we stop listening to hear the final words of his missal.
But those who helps others, God remembers best.
He remembers both of you.
Faith doesn't allow us to forget where we came from.
It is the road upon which we are blessed to travel,
Knowing at times we all feel like a lonesome traveler,
Until we reach that crossroad where Love and Trust come together.
Faith is about life's journey and the road that must be traveled,
With all it twists and turns, with all its ruts and ridges.
And when we stay the course; no matter how hard or painful,
We will get to where we need to be...the place called Faith.
TOBY KOCH (2000)
Don't forget to recognize and support JEFF LEASON in his Walk for BREAST Cancer. I hope you will join my Tony and I, and give something to counter the painful devastation of breast cancer and stop it in its tracks. Regardless of race or creed, breast cancer touches almost every family. Consider this - MEN also get breast cancer. Remember, this Friday let's give Jeff a "a real lift" with our support for him through your generosity.

Next Friday, September 24, TED AURIG from the Camden County Veterans Affairs office is coming to update us on what is available for all of our veterans. Iraqi veteran TIM MISSEL'S inspiring message resonated throughout the Club, inspiring our Community Service Committee (JOEL PETCHON, JEFF LEASON, LIZ SEGAL, PETE LANCE and DEB MYERSON) to acknowledge and honor our veterans at this year's first NETWORKING EVENT the first Wednesday in November. Also on hand to help.Membership Committee (Michele Moken, Bob Rank, Toby Koch and our own favorite veteran ~ JOE EISBERG).

Community Service continues to inspire the Club through its efforts in the community. We are looking for four - five volunteers to make crafts with kids each month. No artistic ability required ~ just a good sense of humor. Just ask Joe and Donna Eisberg, Liz Segal, and Deb Myerson ~ October's volunteers. November is already here. Contact Deb Myerson at 609 -332-8580.
Fellow Rotarians,
These bikini babes are not as innocent as you think. They are holding Santa hostage for ransom in a remote beach shack and threatening not to release him in time for our December 5th Holiday Brunch at the Mansion.
It all started when Santa became the Judge of the Best of Bikini contest. After spending some "quality time" with each candidate, they all were convinced that he would pick each of them. I think Santa has had too much sun!
Unless I can promise each of these women a stunning, rich, and engaging replacement for Santa, he's not coming back. They have threatened to turn him into a Mormon and start of family. Any volunteers?!?
Nervously awaiting you answer,
Holly Hannukoch

The first thing that pops into most people's minds when anyone mentions Toys For Tots is Christmas. Those Marines are really something! They have been our Christmas angels supporting our efforts for RMDH Holiday Party and providing toys for children tucked away in a safe house in South Jersey for battered and abused mothers and their children. This Spring, while Santa is somewhere sunning himself on the beach with Holly Hannukoch, the Marines favorite bunny will be coming to Cherry Hill in April for our first annual Spring Egg Scramble and hunt. Esther Bunny, fiancée of Peter Cottontail will be hosting the event. Children of actively serving military will be our special guests for traditional treats and Marine TFT generosity. Without CARMINE STAINO, former Marine Corps Commander of the 1775 Detachment, so much of what we do in Community Service would be extremely limited. Carmine and his wife will be our guests at the Holiday Brunch. He is a real HERO for our children and us.

Once again, Joe and his "girls" plus Joel, Jeff and Pete are getting ready for the RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE HOLIDAY PARTY on Saturday, December 18th. We still NEED donations of HOLIDAY THEMED PAPER PRODUCTS, CANDY CANES and other HOLIDAY CANDY, SODAS (DIET/REGULAR), BEVERAGE CUPS.
PONZIO'S BAKERY, THE KIBITZ ROOM, TALK OF THE TOWN, and SEASON'S RESTAURANT; along with MARV and MARILYN'S "Pizza Angel" have committed to provide food fit for SANTA and his HELPERS.
Sometime between your holiday shopping at Nordstrom's, your favorite jeweler or WALMART, why not stop at the DOLLAR STORE and help make this an incredible celebration for children and their families waiting for a brighter and healthier future.
THERE IS STILL TIME TO WRITE
TO SANTA WITH YOUR WISHES FOR
GARDEN STATE ROTARY
(December 17, 2010) Many years ago a little girl wrote to a newspaper editor asking about Santa. So many people discouraged her about believing in "him". As another young girl, a Jewish girl, I had "absolute proof" that he was real. After all, the little girl's father was Santa Claus to children who came to see him arrive at the Thanksgiving Day Parade and visit with him at Macy's.
Last year, I shared with the Club why Santa gave coal to certain children; regardless of their ages. He told his own little girl that the coal was meant to warm the hearts of people who have been selfish, unkind and mean spirited. Each of us was given their own piece of coal to warm someone else's heart if needed.
That same little girl has another story to share with you that proves the "existence of Santa". Just before the first night of Hanukkah, after she had gone to bed, the little girl was awakened by the sounds of gifts hastily being wrapped. She was overwhelmed seeing all the toys she had hoped for.
On that first night of Hanukkah, after the first candle was lit, her father announced it was time to gather the gifts and load up his "sleigh" because they were going uptown to Harlem. Ready to go as Santa, he encouraged the little girl to help him fill the sack with presents and bring them into the tenement building. Anxiously the children waited for Santa to present a toy to the children who might otherwise not have Christmas. After all the toys and presents were given out, the little girl sadly took Santa's hand and they drove home.
Santa noticed the disappointment on her face as she asked him, "What about my presents?" He responded telling her she was not forgotten. Her Gift was knowing that all the other children were remembered at Christmas. He reminded her that the gift of giving lasts the longest. Sixty years later I remember that wintery night as Santa and his "helper" brought Christmas to those children.
There was still seven days left to Hanukkah. Not to worry about Santa's little girl. The next day he took her to FAO Schwartz, the black belt of all toy stores, and answered all her wishes. I still can hear his voice. "The gift of giving lasts the longest." Maybe, like my Santa, I believe in ROTARY and all the hope, help, and happiness we gift as Rotarians all year long.
I'm off to the North Pole to help Santa get ready for Christmas Eve and his deliveries. I'll be back after New Year's with a special As The Wheel Turns edition to bring in 2011. Be safe, be healthy and. continue being Rotarians, knowing that within each of us there is a "Santa" to believe in.

Since last June, GEORGE WARNER has quietly supported Garden State Rotary through BROWSE YOUR TOWN, a regional networking organization. Unable to attend our Friday meetings, George has consistently been one of our best "first responders" whenever we need donations or support for our events. George committed his 200 plus member organization to financially support Cherry Hill Celebrates Education last year. "Support Our Troops" is exactly what he did this year by drawing people to the event. George has never said "NO" whenever we asked for a multitude of support and assistance. He is broadcasting the COMEDY NIGHT flyer to his business and professional network of more than 4000 people to help sell tickets.
Often, I tell the Club that RECIPROCITY is the key to receiving. Now we can do just that and still come out ahead of the "deal". George is restarting his business ~ a FREE PICK UP & DELIVERY DRY CLEANING SERVICE, servicing Burlington, Camden and Gloucester Counties~ that impeccably cleans and presses your clothes. He's definitely not one of those $1.99 "impersonators" who allege to clean and press to perfection. In support of Garden State Rotary Foundation he will donate 5% of each transaction back to us. Check out his website - georgesdrycleaning.com for pricing and delivery options for home, business and office. That kind of says it all ~ Check with SCOTT, MICHELLE, or TONY. We'll be more than satisfied ~ we will have RECIPROCATED and helped a good friend.

THE PHILLIES HAVE A REASON
TO GET EXCITED
The Phillies have a reason to be excited. A Night Out with the Phillies is set for APRIL 18th with the Phillies playing the Milwaukee Brewers. With only 111 tickets @ $28 available, be sure to reserve early. We will have a signup sheet circulating at Lunch. Any questions? Contact our Man with the Phillies, MARV @ 665-6555.
Speaking of MARV.on top of everything else he does for Garden State, STRIKE OUT HUNGER is on the horizon for this summer. I now know why the Phillies get so excited when they announce, "Marv is on the phone". With the Phillies pitching team the hottest in Major League Baseball, it's no wonder that tickets are like hens teeth; not baseballs.
This season MARV has secured 3000 tickets. Even before SOH was officially announced, 1500 tickets are gone! Clubs across the Delaware Valley are looking forward to a great night. Kudos to Marv for making STRIKE OUT HUNGER a signature event for years to come.
A NEW JERSEY STATE TROOPER's
ADVICE TO BE HEEDED
Because of recent abductions
In daylight hours, remind yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation...
This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children, everyone you know. After reading these 9 crucial tips, forward them to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do : The elbow is the
strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do! 2.. Learned
this from a tourist guide. If a
robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you.... Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy.. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR ,
LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, Repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it . As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor , and in the back seat. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side... If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!) If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig-zag pattern!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP It may get you
raped,
or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial
killer, was a good-looking, well
educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and
often asked 'for help' into
his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted
his next victim.
9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird.. The police told her 'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door..' The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.
10. Water scam!
If you wake up in the middle of the night to hear all your taps
outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO
INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your outside taps full ball so that you
will go out to investigate and then attack.
Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbors! Please pass this on This e-mail should
probably be taken seriously because the Crying Baby Theory was mentioned
on America 's Most Wanted when they
profiled the serial killer in
Louisiana
I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a life. A candle is not
dimmed by lighting another candle.. I was going to send this to the ladies only, but guys, if you love your mothers, wives, sisters,
daughters, etc., you may want to pass it onto them, as well.
Who says that Garden State Rotarians and Rotary SPouses don't know where to travel?
(February 25, 2011) With all of the news talking about changes, both positive and negative, all over the Middle East and India, it's a wonder that people want to travel anywhere. Then there is our own Tom Veevers, Marilyn Axler, and Terri Greenfield inoculating children against Polio, visiting one of my prospective retirement homes ~ the TAJ, constructing human bridges for Service, and knowing Marilyn.she's out there looking for "my requested bangles" amongst other souvenirs.
I got so motivated by their packing and schlepping the $400 dollars worth of new clothes donated by GSR for orphans that I decided to get on the road, too. My destination ~ King of Prussia, PA. I know I won't see any "Bollywood stars", but I will get to see and be with the Presidents - Elect at the PETS (President Elect Training Seminar). I'll be gone from Thursday the 24th until Saturday the 26th.
Our President - Elect for 2012-2013, PAUL ADLER, will run the meeting, making prospective members and guests feel welcome and wanting to join the Club that not only makes the difference ~ WE are the difference here and around the world. While I'm mentioning this week's meeting, let me not forget to remind RICH LEES, our loquacious Sergeant-at-Arms that it's up to him to keep the SSHH PADDLE at bay.
It's time for our 7th inning stretch
(March 5, 2011) June 2010 seems like light years away from where we are today, thanks to members such as you. Each week the meetings are filled with new faces and ideas, receptive members, and a restored energy which comes from speakers who bring forth messages that are timely, relevant, and often entertaining. Before we go the distance and reach "home plate" in the bottom of our ninth inning we should all consider ~
· Why did you join Garden State? Was it the food? Was it the speakers? Was it sitting with your friends to chat non-stop? What it your sense of responsibility to make our world more habitable, safer and friendlier?
· Since joining GSR, have your expectations been met? Have you been giving the opportunity to be "a part" of the human connection the world calls ROTARY?
· Are you ready to step up and stand with fellow Rotarians to create opportunities for your community, neighbors and colleagues through Service Above Self as a committee chair or Board Member?
We can't hit one "out of the park" every time at we are at bat. If we keep the field of Service clear of mean spiritedness, rivalries, and jealousy ~ we are destined to have a Championship Season ~ because of members like you. My favorite Rotarian, my Dad, would often remind me as I would reluctantly come up to bat (Babe Ruth's sister I wasn't) ~ Toby, it's not how hard you swing the bat. It's how smart you hit the ball. Let's keep doing it!

Cardiovascular Exercise
The older we get the more important it is to incorporate exercise into our daily routine. This is necessary to maintain cardiovascular health and maintain muscle mass.
If you're over 50, you might want to take it easy at first, then do more repetitions as you become more proficient and build stamina. Warning: It may be too strenuous for some.

Best and worst bottled water brands
How much do you know about the bottled water you drink? Not nearly enough, according to a new report released today from Environmental Working Group (EWG). "Bottled water companies try hard to hide information you might find troubling," says Jane Houlihan, senior vice president of research for the Washington D.C.-based research and advocacy group.
[Read more: Cities with the best (and worst) tap water]
EWG analyzed the labels of 173 unique bottled water products and company websites to determine if companies disclose information on where water comes from, how or if their water is treated, and whether the results of purity testing are revealed. The nonprofit also looked at how effective (and advanced) any water treatment methods are. Researchers followed up by calling dozens of bottled water companies to find out which ones willingly tell consumers what's in their bottles.
The Environmental Protection Agency says on its website that consumers have the right to know where their water comes from and what's in it so they can "make informed choices that affect the health of themselves and their families." Tap water is regularly tested and consumers can find their local water info online. That's not necessarily the case with bottled water, which is not required to disclose that information to consumers. "Bottled water is a food product and every one of these companies is complying with federal law," says Tom Lauria, of the International Bottled Water Association.
More than half of the bottled water products surveyed failed EWG's transparency test --18 percent didn't say where their water comes from, and another 32 percent did not disclose any information on treatment or purity of water.
Only three brands earned the highest possible marks for disclosing information and using the most advanced treatment methods available - Gerber Pure Purified Water, Nestle Pure Life Purified Water, and Penta Ultra-Purified Water.
On the other end of the spectrum, these six brands got the worst marks in EWG's report because they don't provide consumers with the three basic facts about water on product labels or their company website - Whole Foods Italian Still Mineral Water, Vintage Natural Spring Water, Sahara Premium Drinking Water, O Water Sport Electrolyte Enhanced Purified Drinking Water, Market Basket Natural Spring Water, and Cumby's Spring Water.
How does your bottled water brand stack up? Here's a look at the 10 top-selling* U.S. brands:
1. Pure Life Purified Water (Nestle), EWG grade = B
2. Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water (Nestle), EWG grade = C
3. Aquafina Purified Drinking Water (Pepsi), EWG grade = D
4. Dasani Purified Water (Coca-Cola), EWG grade = D
5. Deer Park Natural Spring Water (Nestle), EWG grade = D
6. Ice Mountain Natural Spring Water (Nestle), EWG grade = D
7. Ozarka Natural Spring Water (Nestle), EWG grade = D
8. Poland Spring Natural Spring Water (Nestle), EWG grade = D
9. Zephyrhills Natural Spring Water (Nestle), EWG grade = D
10. Crystal Geyser Natural Alpine Spring Water (CG Roxane), EWG grade = F
Filtered tap water received the best grade (an A) from EWG because if you change your filter regularly, EWG says it is purer than bottled water, plus it saves money (bottled water can cost up to 1,900 times more than what flows from your tap). Drinking tap water also takes less of a toll on the planet. EWG offers plenty of tips for filtering your tap water so that you can drink the healthiest water possible.
