Changes in RWMC Cancer Services

On this, our last September meeting of 2016, the weather is beautiful. We welcome our student guests.  Lesar Rodriguez is a senior at Scottsbluff High, is very active, and plans on becoming a Pediatrician.  Brent Massar is active at Gering High and hopes to become an Engineer.  President Karpf thanks those who volunteered to man the food table at the Monument Marathon. He also congratulated the club for being the Star Herald’s Readers’ Choice for best Civic Organization.  Our speaker today was Tadd Greenfield, Chief Operating Officer at Regional West Medical Center (RWMC). His topic Oncological service at RWMC. He began with some statistics on Cancer.  Over 1.6 million people will be diagnosed with cancer this year and 595690 will die. Breast cancer is the number one cancer in the U.S.  RWMC has invested in new technology to help in the fight of cancer.  The Brilliance C.T. Big Bore Scanner has been installed and is almost ready for use.  Advantages involve much improved software which eliminates the scatter from metal artifacts such as artificial joints, the ability to scan in between inhaling and exhaling which provides a more precise location of the cancer, and a laser positioning system which helps duplicate position for each scan thus allowing better evaluation of the cancer size. This machine allows for better information and helps provide it in a timely manner.
