What is V.I.T.A.

Today’s meeting began with introductions of our student guests. Thomas Ganis is attending Gering High and hopes to study Finance intends to be involved in Banking. Jerry Escamilla is a senior at Scottsbluff High and intends to become a secondary education math teacher.  Announcements by President West included a thank you to all who attended the Rowdy Rotarian Movie night. 51 were in attendance for the Movie at the Midwest Theater last Saturday, not just Rotarians but Soroptimist and B.P.W. members were there to enjoy prescreening beverages and snacks catered by Rick Keller and the Meat Shop.  The program today was given by Carmen Trevino who works for C. A.P.W.N. (Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska). She is here to talk about the V.I.T.A. (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. The program help low income families file their tax returns and then hopes to educate them on spending their refunds wisely. The program is run by a short staff and at one point discussions were to suspend the program. Mrs. Trevino fought for its existence as it help many who have nowhere to get help. Because of the short staff issues, the program can only help those who qualify by being under the 200% of poverty income.  Their mission is to be able to provide services to all individuals who fall within their income guidelines.
