Virtual Field Trips

We welcome our two student guests: Josie Brown from Gering High and Amadep Cheema from Scottsbluff High. Miss Brown plans on attending Chadron State College with the RHOP program and study nursing. Miss Cheema plans on attending C.S.U. or Penn State and hopes to major in psychology. Our program today is B.J. Peters, head of technology for Educational Service Unit (ESU) 13.  Mr. Peters began with the E.S.U. twenty years ago putting together the distant learning program for the twenty one school districts. He now provides technology for over 75 distant learning programs. Today he is presenting the newest educational experience, virtual field trips (VFT). Schools can visit a number of museums via the internet. We met Cindy, a curator of the University of Nebraska State Museum in Lincoln. He explained how she can interact with students who visit the museum virtually.  She explained that there are different programs the museum offers. Many include sending a kit to the class prior to the visit and then using the projects from the kit to get the students to interact during the tour. Her example was a program the Hemmingford class was involved in. Prior to the virtual visit, the class shifted trough sand and found fossils, some were identified but one was not. They then used the museum to learn about the mammoth bones on display and discover they have a mammoth tooth and then go on to find which mammoth the tooth belongs to. We asked bot B.J. and Cindy questions during the presentation
