NRD- Geothermal Greenhouse Project

On this nice warm Tuesday afternoon, we welcome our student guests. Adam Minch is from Gering and hopes to study Mechanical Engineering at South Dakota School of Mines. Kaitlyn Shalenburger is from Scottsbluff and hopes to attend either U.N.K. or Chadron State. Lyle Hoke made a plea to the membership to contribute to their Paul Harris Fellowship as the annual luncheon is coming up. Our program today was Barb Cross and Jennifer Berge-Sauter on the North Platte Natural Resource District Geo-Thermal Greenhouse project.  This project is the recipient of our upcoming Rotary Gold fund raiser. Both have been here prior but now have a power point presentation to give the club a better idea about the project. The greenhouse will have two rooms, one for education and one for growing various plants. The greenhouse will be temperature controlled by air pipes which are buried eight feet underground. The air is a constant temperature and fans will force the air through the facility to regulate the temperature in both the summer and winter months. The house itself will be located four foot below the ground the area surrounding it will be host to native grasses and pollinators which should attract bees and butterflies.  The material estimate is $18,000.00 and many area businesses are contributing to its construction. They hope to grow fruits and vegetables which can be donated to organizations such as the cat and pup pack project. Also some exotic flowers which can be used by local florists. Ground breaking is to be announced but Ms. Cross hopes to have a grand opening in August, showcasing growing plants.
