What's New at the 'Y'

Janet Spangler, from Gering High and Ashley Behr, from Scottsbluff, were our guests today. Miss Spangler plans on attending U.N.K. and majoring in Business administration. Miss Behr has her sights on UNL and begin the long road to becoming a Pediatrician.
It was announced that long standing member Bill Lindgren passed away last week and services will be held tomorrow. On a personal note, Bill had problems with his eyesight for many years, and He would drive to my office when I practiced in Gering, and I would bring him to Rotary. We became friends as we rode back and forth, and he shared many stories about his early life. From his time in the military, to his days running Scottsbluff Typewriter, he always made me laugh. God’s speed, my friend.
Our program today was Candie Albright and Triniti Burgner with the Scottsbluff/Gering Y.M.C.A. They are here to talk about Staying Relevant in Challenging Times, your Y.M.C.A. today. The management team realizes that the community today has many options in selecting a fitness center. They took a survey and discovered areas which they could improve and opportunities which they could capitalize on. New one day events targeted to middle school patrons include a dodgeball tournament. Older children were not content in the current childcare, and some parents were uneasy letting them roam free. They have made a ‘Hang’ area in one of the former racquetball courts. They have also eliminated Jersey for teams and now issue t-shirts which the participants keep and advertise the ‘Y’. Social media has improved. More timely updates allow information to disperse quicker. They are listing the Trails West camp on ARBNB, and other sites to increase interest.  Over all, there is a lot going on at the ‘Y’. They encourage you to check it out.
