Rotary Club Meeting Notes 8/6/19

Sharon Zimmerman gave Rotarians an uplifting start to the meeting with thoughts of gratitude and reflection. Followed by Marlene Bevan who gave us a tuneful three rounds and a sound ‘sound cycle’ or 'Quadlibit' introduced by Marlene, she reminded us that “we sing because it is inside of us and we have been singing all this time”.

Lisa Pointe introduced visiting guests and Rotarians. From near and far!

Jayne Mohr introduced one of those guests, Lizzy Freed the District Global Scholar. Lizzy coming from FAR out, the Netherlands where she Agriculture and Agroecology at Wageningen University. In her second year, Lizzy is developing her thesis based on commitments countries are putting towards the Paris agreement and the changing climate. In her first year, Lizzy worked closely with Refugees on a garden project to grow food for themselves and teach them agricultural management practices. Go Lizzy!

Greg Luyt gave a Rotary Charities update and the collaborative grant criteria highlighting the Healthy Food Access Hub.

Ed Dunlap from Cadillac Rotary encouraged TC Rotarians to join in the White Pine ride on September 7th, conflicting with the 9/11 run but noted ‘some like to ride and some like to run’.

Tom Haase encouraged volunteers to ‘tag in’ for tag day shifts.

Rotary Charities appointed Benjamin Marentette

The Rotary Golf Outing is approaching and sign-up is still available.

The next meeting will be held at NMC Hagerty center, after much confusion whether they were the Hawk Owls or Hawk Eyes the president advised all to “pick your own bird and just show up!”

Al Zelinkski walked out of the raffle with $65 buckaroos.

District 6290 Governor Dave Thomas

Dave Thomas our District Governor and Petoskey Rotary Member gave an inspiring discussion about how to make Rotary a successful ‘automobile’. Dave has traveled all over the country for work, has a loving family and has many admirable accomplishments, including his service as a sergeant in the Marines.

The discussion started with everything we do is a continuum and there are 3 overarching areas that make a club successful while fulfilling the lives of the Rotarians involved and all of which it affects. The three things Dave said that make a club successful were that success comes from structure and good leadership, a board that supports a club and the rotary foundation.

All of these were incorporated into the making of the automobile of the club. This highlighted things like board support, strong membership, keeping marketing a ‘classy chassie’, youth engagement, unique design, and engineering amongst other things to make a pretty cool automobile. With the automobile constructed, it increases the opportunity and ability of the club to deliver all avenues of service.

Dave mentioned that continued club engagement and honing in on the world impact will continue to increase the success of Rotary. He highlighted the breadth of membership in Traverse City and the kind individuals involved, and that it is a special place to be “Rotary: just add water- instant family”.

Upon Closing, Dave presented Traverse City Rotary Club with the 100-year member certificate.

The JJ Beckett Access- ABILITY Committee
Rotary Club of Traverse City

The JJ Beckett Access-ABILITY Committee (formerly the Handicap Committee) primary focus is to assist individuals in overcoming limits caused by a disability and improve access to a fuller life. The committee provides financial assistance to residents in need within our region for the purchase of equipment or services that increase independence, inclusion, advance development and enrich lives

Applicants submit a request for assistance via an application form which is reviewed and investigated by a committee member. A final decision is then made on the application by a vote of the committee.

Funds for granting requests are generously given by community members and Rotarians annually during an event called Tag Day. Tag Day involves committee members and additional Rotarians requesting donations from community residents at various retail locations throughout the area.

The committee considers all requests but the primary goal of this committee is serving the needs of individuals who have exhausted all other means of assistance.
