A very warm happy birthday wish goes out to Charlie Winkler this week.  Charlie is 96 years young on October 13th.

And, very happy anniversary wishes go out this week to Lou (and Joan) Lepry, celebrating Golden Anniversary plus 7.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Betsy DePrimo reports that the phonebook is being 'proofed' this week, as publication of the 2011 Rotary Phonebook nears.

Friday, October 21st is coming up...so don't forget to sign up (see President Mike) and get your P-Bruins tickets.  It will be a great game, and a great Rotary night at The Dunk.  Tickets are $12, and the game starts at 7PM.

Bonnie Sauer is ready to lead the charge, officially kicking off the 2011 Citrus Campaign next week.  She's already lining up good media coverage (The Patch and EG Magazine) and planning on a successful year in Citrus, as we partner up with East Greenwich Little League in support of the Cragan Field Lights Project.

Wednesday, October 26th will be the date for our End Polio Now Walk.  We'll meet at Chianti's for our regular lunch, and when the meeting is over we'll begin our symbolic walk back into town.  This will be part of Rotary's district-wide and worldwide effort to help eradicate Polio from the world, once and for all.  The club's journey will take us to Town Hall/Main Street Coffee.  Those not walking are asked to ferry folks back to their cars at Chianti's.  Also, our speaker that day will be John Nanni, coming up from New Jersey, who will share his story of living with polio.  Past Rotarian of the Year Jerry Meyer will join us as well, providing coverage of the day's events for The East Greenwich Patch.

George Popella announced that former Rotarian and friend Lee Whitaker is the last of his team to receive a Paul Harris Award.  Lee asked George to present his Paul Harris award to (Chub's better half) Florence Clement, in honor of Florence's numerous endeavors in the world of community service throughout the years.  Nice work, Lee!

Finally, President Mike announced that Rotary Jackets are on the way!

HAPPY BUCKS

Dave Iannuccilli is a happy grandpa once again.  Shauna Iannuccilli, wife to Dave's son Jason, gave birth to a happy and healthy baby girl, Quinn.  Quinn is Dave's third grandchild, and, the first born daughter to Jason and Shauna.

Betsy DePrimo thanked her Phonebook Committee for all of their tremendous work during this year's tough but successful campaign.  Betsy was also happy this week to take a peek at Dr. Bob Miller's cover page.  Dr. Bob was the contributing photographer of the renovated Cole Middle School, and his work will grace page one of this year's edition.

Jane Boynton enjoyed a very happy and very free trip to Nantucket recently, courtesy of a very generous colleague from Jane's tile business.

Diane Spaziani gave a happy buck of thanks to Bonnie Sauer and the Citrus Committee, who have been helping Diane's Smithfield Club get a Citrus Campaign of their own off the ground.

Dr. Bob Miller was happy that Betsy DePrimo's house hasn't sold yet, which has allowed her to stay in our company that much longer and do such a fantastic job with the Phonebook this summer and fall.

Bob Sloan attended a school reunion recently and discovered that an old friend is now...the US Ambassador to Vietnam!

Andy Erickson and wife Polly are looking forward to an evening coming up at Mory's Restaurant, adjacent to Yale, during which grandson Drew and the Spizzwinks will be performing.

Chuck Sauer passed on an amazing story from recent news about former Rotarian Jesse Behl chasing after a would-be carjacker!

SPEAKER/PROGRAM

Donna Attardo, RN, from Miriam Hospital's Center for Cardiac Fitness

Donna Attardo cited that 50% of all deaths in the United States are related to heart disease.  Two million Americans are eligible for cardiac care and rehabilitation, yet only 15% of this group will enter a cardiac fitness program.

Anyone who has had heart problems including a heart attack, heart surgery, or angina can be referred by his or her doctor to the Miriam Center for Cardiac Fitness.  It is a 12-week program once referred, one which becomes 'like a part-time job' according to Donna.  The main goals for Donna's patients are: 1) improving functional heart capacity; 2) managing cardiac risks; 3) reducing the rate of morbidity; and 4) improving the quality of life for those enrolled.

For good cardiac health, one might enroll in a program of half hour sessions for 3-4 days per week.  For cardiac health and weight loss, one would enroll in one-hour sessions, 5-6 days per week.  Exercise is a 'life component,' a must for everyone especially as we advance in years.  Miriam also has excellent education programs, tackling topics such as good nutrition as well as passing on information about clinical, behavioral, and exercise programs.

Other Miriam cardiac fitness activities include food festivals and cooking demonstrations, as well as 'fitness challenge' workshops and weight loss programs.  Patients can even bring in family members for support, education, and consultations.

"Whether you're recovering from an episode of angina or open-heart surgery, or you're interested in prevention programs, the Center for Cardiac Fitness can help you keep your heart healthy. Our state-of-the-art facility is staffed with experienced medical professionals from The Miriam Hospital who will work with you to improve your condition.  Our program activities are planned and conducted according to the severity of each patient's cardiac condition and functional ability--and personalized by baseline diagnostic testing and regular medical monitoring of his or her progress. Our goal is to provide the correct balance of exercise, nutrition, stress management, education, and individual support services that will help patients incorporate heart healthy habits into their everyday lives." --from the Miriam Center for Cardiac Fitness website
