Rotary Peace Fellows' Seminar 2023

"Fostering Peace: Leave No One Behind"

The Rotary Peace Centre at the University of Queensland was established in 2001, after an extensive worldwide search by Rotary International. Rotary wished to initiate a new program that would make a practical contribution to the quest for a more peaceful world. Annually up to 110 Peace Fellows attend one of the 7 Rotary Centres around the world to undertake a Master’s Degree or Professional Development Certificate in Peace and Conflict Studies. This reflects Rotary’s commitment to education and learning as an important tool in the goal to advance peace and justice internationally, alongside its other major focus of humanitarian work such as eradicating Polio and improving water and sanitation in various locations around the world.

A Message From Peace Centre Head, Professor Roland Bleiker:

Dear Rotary colleagues

It is our pleasure to invite you to the 2023 Annual Seminar of the Rotary Peace Centre at the University of Queensland.

The Seminar takes place on Saturday 22 April 2023 from 10.30am to 6pm in the May Hancock Auditorium at The University of Queensland’s Women’s College, St Lucia.

The theme of this year’s Seminar is Fostering Peace: Leave No One Behind.

During the seminar you will hear from the Peace Fellows of Class 19 and 20.  In particular, you will find out about their Applied Field Experience, which they conducted during the recent summer break and which took them to places as diverse as Fiji, Germany, Nepal, Mongolia, Sydney, Cairns, Amman, and New York.  You will also get to meet the Class 21 Peace Fellows, who recently arrived in Brisbane to start their program.

There will be a keynote address by UQ’s Associate Professor Marianne Hanson, who was Co-Director of the UQ Rotary Centre when we started over two decades ago and later served for several years as the sole director.  Marianne is the author of a recent and fascinating book with Manchester University Press called Challenging Nuclearism: A Humanitarian Approach to Reshape the Global Nuclear Order.

The Seminar is organised by the Fellows themselves, led by a fantastic Organising Committee, comprised of Sarah Wind, Tunde Ogunyale and Nick Milward, and supported by our Centre Manager, Diana McCluskey, and Deputy-Director Dr Sebastian Kaempf.

  • You can enrol for either on-campus or online participation.
  • Eventbrite registration link on the left
  • Please register by 14th April.

We and all the Peace Fellows very much look forward to welcoming you at our Annual Rotary Peace Seminar.

With best wishes

Sarah Wind, Tunde Ogunyale, Nick Millward, Diana McCluskey, Sebastian Kaempf, Roland Bleiker
