Rotary Club of Greater Long Branch presents annual scholarship awards

 

       

Congratulations Johanis and Madeline!  The 2016 Rotary Cub of Greater Long Branch Scholarship Recipients Johanis Bonilla from Long Branch High and Madeline MacStudy of Shore Regional accept their $3,000 awards

 

 

The Rotary Club handed out its annual scholarship awards to students from Shore Regional and Long Branch high schools.  The ceremony took place at its weekly meeting Friday June 10 at Rooney's here in Long Branch.

   The 2016 club scholarship award recipients were Johanis Bonilla from Long Branch and Madeline MacStudy from Shore.

   Ms. Bonilla will be attending Rutgers University in the Fall, while Ms. MacStudy will be continuing her education at the University of Pittsburgh.  Both students will be pursuing a career in medicine.

   Each year, the Rotary Club of Greater Long Branch Foundation awards two of our area's best and brightest students -- one each from Long Branch and Shore Regional -- a $3,000 scholarship.

   These two outstanding young women combined a commitment to academic excellence and co-curricular activities, specifically, community service.  The Club's Foundation was formed in 2006 with the primary objective to provide scholarships to deserving area high school students who best exemplify the Rotary International credo of "Service Above Self".

   Club kicks off 2016 Spring Challenger Soccer League

   The club's Soccer Program for special needs youths began again on Saturday, May 28 at Manhasset Creek Park at the end of Long Branch Ave..  The league, sponsored by the Club and free to all participants, affords children with Autism, Down Syndrome and other developmental disabilities the opportunity to participate in sports just like typical children.

  Each player has a volunteer "buddy" to accompany him or her on the field, while they move thru a short practice followed by a 20 minute game.  The league is volunteer coached by Bill Mizerak, a former stand out soccer star at the University of Scranton.  The children, volunteers and parents then can participate in a post game Yoga session, led by Amy Zambrano of Amy's Yogabilities.

   The league is open to kids ages 7 - 21 and runs thru Saturday July 9.  For information call 908-675-1146
