North Reading Community EarlyAct Kicks Off
The North Reading Community EarlyAct Club recently installed thirty students into the service club for the 2017-18 academic year. The co-ed club is open to students in grades three through five. North Reading Youth Services Director Amy Luckiewicz noted, “This has been our highest enrollment we have ever had since beginning the program in 2014.” At its installation meeting, the students took the EarlyAct Oath: I promise to do my best to understand, accept and help people. I will keep leadership, commitment and gratitude in my mind as I work to do service above self. The community club represents all schools in North Reading. Based on a Rotary International model, the projects and meetings focus on the values of gratitude, community, leadership, commitment, and inclusion. The club meets twice per month to plan and implement a local or international humanitarian project. Initiated in 2014, the group was formed by 4 parent volunteers: Sandy Garniss, Samantha Miller, Karen Buscemi, and Leslie Schultz in partnership with North Reading Rotary Club’s Peter Majane.

Peabody's District Managed Grant May Have Saved a Life
In 2013, Peabody Rotary, with the help of a District Managed Grant, sponsored CPR training for teachers, administrators and staff at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. The club also donated a defibrillator to Peabody’s food pantry, Haven From Hunger.

Last month, as school was releasing for the day, a 16 year-old student passed out. She was immediately given CPR by staff members and then Principal Eric Buckley used the High School’s defibrillator to revive the student. Because of their fast action and training, this young lady will be fine.

Although we are not sure if the staff members who performed the CPR were part of the original Rotary training, we do know that the Rotary grant provided the basis for the CPR and solidified the importance of staff being prepared for emergencies such as this one. And this proves the value of the District Managed Grant program.
Newburyport Rotarians Serve Breakfast at Salisbury Senior Center

The Rotarians provided cider donuts from Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury. Rotarian and Police Chief Tom Fowler spoke about Halloween hours for the town of Salisbury as well as IRS and cyber scams. The seniors especially enjoyed the fresh cider donuts and were able to take some home for a snack later.
