The Rotary Club of Kenton-on-Sea helped to improve the quality of life for a little grade 2 boy named Storm, who suffers from a muscular disorder that has made him unable to walk or even use a wheelchair in a sitting position. Click for the full story!
ANOTHER ROTARY STORY

DISEASE IS NO RESPECTER OF ANYBODY. IN A SMALL TOWN IN SOUTHERN AFRICA, A LITTLE BOY NAMED STORM WAS BORN. HE GREW NORMALLY IN EVERY WAY UNTIL HE WAS 6. THEN HE STARTED TO LOSE HIS PHYSICAL STRENGTH AND WENT FROM WALKING, TO CRAWLING TO LOSING ALL MOBILITY.  ALL SORTS OF TESTS WERE DONE AND THE ANSWER CAME BACK – HE WAS SUFFERING FROM DUCHENE’S MUSCULAR DISORDER … THERE WAS VERY LITTLE THAT COULD BE DONE. SADLY, IT RESULTED IN STORM BEING REMOVED FROM SCHOOL IN GRADE 2 BECAUSE HE WAS NO LONGER A “NORMAL” LITTLE BOY; HE COULDN’T DO WHAT HIS PEERS WERE DOING.

STORM’S CONDITION CAME TO THE ATTENTION OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF KENTON ON SEA IN 2012. THIS CLUB IS ONE OF MANY AROUND THE WORLD TO HAVE A PASSION FOR PROVIDING WHEELCHAIRS FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT ABLE TO ACCESS OR AFFORD ONE FOR THEMSELVES, AND OUR PROJECT CONVENOR, BARRIE BROWN, WAS ABLE TO PROVIDE A SUITABLE CHAIR FOR STORM. SINCE THEN, AS STORM HAS GROWN, SEVERAL UPGRADES HAVE BEEN PROVIDED, TOGETHER WITH A HOIST TO HELP HIS MOTHER TO RAISE HIM WHEN NECESSARY. SADLY, THIS CONDITION IS LIKELY TO WORSEN AND NOW, AT THE AGE OF 15, STORM IS NO LONGER ABLE TO SIT UP IN A WHEELCHAIR.

ROTARIANS, HOWEVER, DON’T RECOGNIZE DEFEAT AND, TOGETHER WITH THE INGENUITY OF A NEARBY FARMING COUPLE, TWO WHEELCHAIRS HAVE BEEN MERGED INTO A “WHEEL-BED” ON WHICH STORM CAN LIE AND STILL BE MOBILE. THIS IS BY NO MEANS A COMPLETE SOLUTION, BUT IT ALLOWS STORM TO ENJOY BEING WHEELED OUTSIDE TO FEEL THE SUN ON HIS FACE ….. STILL TO BE A PART OF HIS COMMUNITY.

MEMBERS OF THIS COMMUNITY HAVE RECOGNISED THAT THE BURDEN ON HIS FINACIALLY INSECURE FAMILY IS SUBSTANTIAL, AND ARE TRYING TO FIND WAYS TO HELP RAISE MONEY TO PROVIDE SOME ESSENTIALS, SUCH AS ADULT NAPPIES, TO MAKE LIFE A LITTLE EASIER FOR STORM AND HIS MOTHER.

IN THIS AGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, IS THERE A SILVER LINING ANYWHERE? COULD A NECK BRACE BE ADDED TO A WHEELCHAIR TO ENABLE STORM TO SIT UP AS WELL? ARE THERE PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO COULD HELP? PLEASE CONTACT THE ROTARY CLUB OF KENTON ON SEA @rotarykenton / 082 809 3359
