On April 25, 2015, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8M hit Nepal, killing more than 8,000 people, injuring more than 23,000, and leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless with entire villages flattened.

Since that day, Rotarians worldwide have reacted quickly, raising thousands of dollars designated for recovery efforts and supporting partner organizations like ShelterBox.

Since that day, Rotarians worldwide have reacted quickly, raising thousands of dollars designated for recovery efforts and supporting partner organizations like ShelterBox. By late May, ShelterBox teams had put over $2,000,000 of aid on the ground, with much of it having to be hand carried into villages that weren’t accessible by ground or air.

Ellina Kushinar, the senior coordinator for Rotary service connections, said, “When disaster strikes, our partner ShelterBox often works closely with Rotarians to evaluate local needs and devise a plan for immediate response. The Rotary family provides vital assistance to ShelterBox Response Teams by helping with disaster assessments, housing response team volunteers, and helping coordinate relief logistics. Over the past twelve years, Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Interactors have partnered with ShelterBox to help communities in dire need of assistance immediately following a disaster.

When the April earthquake hit Nepal, Rotaractors and Rotarians quickly connected with ShelterBox to assess damage and mobilize emergency relief teams. The Rotary family in Nepal and around the world has been instrumental in helping ShelterBox with logistics, transportation, housing Response Teams, and sponsoring emergency shelter tents and relief kits.

In addition to the efforts of partner organizations such as ShelterBox, Rotary clubs in our District are in close touch with the Rotary Club of Nepal: Kathmandu Mid-Town, which is most active in relief efforts.  Click below for the first progress report, which gives details of their assistance.
