Welcome to our May newsletter!

District Governor News May 2019

Happy spring to all!  This has been a busy spring for many of our clubs with fundraising activities.  My husband and I have gotten around to several of these.  Each of them had unique ideas that worked and are worth sharing with other clubs.  I have thoroughly enjoyed getting a chance to participate in these.

May is Youth Service month.  Our district does a great job in this area!  So many of our clubs sponsor Interact Clubs in the local high schools.  I have had a chance to visit a few of these in the last couple of months.  If your club does not yet have an Interact Club, I encourage you to take a close look at connecting with your high school to make that happen.  Also, a handful of clubs are sponsoring Interact Clubs in the middle schools.  Then they are ready to move right into the high school club.  Remember, these young people are the future of Rotary as they embark on their Rotary journeys.  Our district also has 2 active Rotoract Clubs with a 3rd ready to kick off in the fall.  Plus a number of clubs sponsor EarlyAct Clubs in the grade schools.

The first weekend in May is our month for RYLA.  I am looking forward to attending and hanging out with these engaging and energetic young people.  It is such an impressive program put on by the staff at Laredo Taft and our Rotary volunteers.

Many, if not most, of our clubs are doing some kind of literacy project in the schools as well, either by giving out dictionaries or other books, and/or spending time reading with the children.  My club does a reading program in the Rockford grade schools and I read for an hour a week with three 2nd-graders.  I can tell you it is definitely one of the best hours of my week.

The District Conference is now only 2 weeks away.  We will be getting together for fun and inspiration at the De Soto House in Galena on May 17 and 18.  If you have not yet registered, do it now.  Don’t miss this chance to celebrate the work we have done this year!

Sterling Rotary Recognizes Students

The Sterling Noon Rotary Club held its 34th Annual Student Excellence Recognition Program on April 10, 2019 at Abiding Word Church.   One hundred students from Sterling and Newman High Schools were recognized as future leaders who we will send off into the world to help make it a better place through service, good will, high ethical standards, and leadership....the ideals of Rotary.

Foundation Message from Ruth

It’s May!  We certainly have had a challenging winter and early spring, but spring now is in full bloom.  Are you feeling rejuvenated?  I know I am.  We have new opportunities to make a difference.  One of the major ways we make a difference is through our giving to The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund.  As of the (almost) end of April, we had achieved 83% of the clubs’ combined goal of $135,889.  Based on 1,709 members x $100/member - the Every Rotarian Every Year goal - we could give $170,900 by June 30, 2019, and I would be doing my HAPPY DANCE!!!

Rotary makes high-quality healthcare available to vulnerable mothers and children, so they can live longer lives and grow stronger.  Rotarians work to access quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a healthy future.  An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate healthcare and poor sanitation - all of which can be prevented.

Our District can be VERY proud of our FOUR EarlyAct Clubs, TWENTY FOUR Interact Clubs, and soon-to-be THREE Rotaract Clubs – ALL doing amazing things within their schools, community and world!  Our District Youth Services Committee invited all clubs to showcase a project for this month’s Newsletter. NINE Clubs responded and are featured here! (click the read more button).  Congrats to Ottawa Township HS Interact, Bureau Valley HS Interact and Rochelle Township HS Interact, whose Clubs are selected to each receive a $100.00 award in this round, for use toward your next project! ALL others were truly outstanding as well!  Stay tuned for more opportunities to Showcase your Program and to qualify for future awards!
