June is Rotary Fellowships Month

This letter is the last of my term.
 
151 people attended the district conference from May 9 to May 11. We discussed fellowship, youth programs, polio, volunteerism and Rotary Fellowships.
 
For the month of June, Rotary International asks us to highlight the importance of Rotary Fellowships. These fellowships originated in 1928, and today, there are over a hundred international associations of Rotary members who share the same passions. Do you enjoy wine, astrology, beer, fine cuisine or home exchange? There is certainly a Rotary Fellowship that matches your interests.
 
On Monday, June 30 at midnight, Rotary’s iconic wheel will turn for many members of the district. For me, many members of various committees, and club presidents, it marks the end of a Rotary year full of emotions, meetings and discussions.
 
I began the year with the anxiety of living up to the standard of Past Governors who came before me. Rotary International often tells us: ’We must change and innovate’. I chose to lead my governor year ‘My Way’ as Frank Sinatra sang.
 
I drew inspiration from what I applied throughout my business career: I emphasized participation in the field, recognition, gratitude, communication and pride in being a member of the team of…The Rotary.
 
To be different, I chose a theme song: ’Holding out for a Hero’ by Bonny Tyler. I especially insisted on these words from Bonny Tyler: ‘I need a Hero’.
 
I also modified the Rotary theme to: ’With the Magic of Rotary, You show how proud you are to be one of the Rotarian heroes’.
As I often said: ’’Karen, Dino and the car traveled 19,000 miles and made 125 club visits whether for activities related to the 7 Areas of Focus, fundraising or official meetings”.
 
Every Rotary, Rotaract and Interact Club received a visit from Karen and Dino. We shook hands and met over 2,000 members in the district. In every club, we saw visible heroes, quiet heroes and sometimes a beautiful diversity of heroes. Together they apply Rotary’s motto: Service above Self.
 
Thanks to the addition of a new Rotaract club and the performance of certain clubs, the district’s membership grew by 32 members: the first growth in five years. With the addition of younger members, the district is steadily moving toward a promising future.
 
Finally, on the behalf of the young girls, women and families of Madagascar, I say THANK YOU for your $60,000 US contribution to the governor’s project.
 
If someone offers you the position of district governor, say YES. Like a journey, your discoveries, emotions and learning will be fulfilled, and your year will be unforgettable.
 
Karen and I are thankful for your welcome, your conversations, your discussions, your pride in showcasing your club’s sponsored initiatives and most of all, your shared emotions. Like Maya Angelou said: ’People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel’.
