January 2017

District Governor's Message

The Holiday Season has given us the opportunity to get closer to our parents and friends and to share our common values of peace, love and solidarity.
This special time prepares us to start a new year with joy and renewed strength in order to pursue our annual goal which is to serve humanity.
Each month of the year has a unique theme for Rotarians. January is the month where we want to burst the concept of our Vocational actions. We are invited to:
  • Encourage and nurture the observance of high ethical standards in business and professions ;
  • The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations;
  • The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
In order to put these ideals into action, I encourage you to read this document « An introduction to vocational service » where you will find several suggestions to develop your vocational service.
Now there’s another way to Serve Humanity: Know yourselves and make yourself known.
The beginning of the New Year also means that we are undertaking the second half of our Rotary year which will end in June.  About a year ago, I launched at the PETS the RI President’s and District’s goals for the year. Now is the time to review these goals and measure where we stand. Have you met your membership goals ? What about your other goals ?
Several of you have asked me to share my Governor’s speech which I pronounced to all the Clubs during my visits. This text and the messages contained in it were pronounced so that you could be encouraged to pursue your goals. These messages are still valid today. The message is below.
As part of our administrative goals for the District, there is the continued pursuit of the club management system and its integration with Rotary International’s system. This newsletter is sent to all members included in the District database. Unfortunately, many clubs haven’t updated their member lists with the e-mail address. Please, I ask all club secretaries to make sure all their members receive this newsletter and the District database is updated so that all their members can receive the information that is sent to them. Furthermore, the integration of the District database with Rotary International’s database must be activated to ensure your member list is the same in both databases. It is a fundamental need to be able to reach all our members.
Yours in Rotary,
DG Jean-Louis Joly
The Conductor's Wand
"Small occasions are often the beginning of great enterprises." - Demosthene (4th century BC) one of the greatest orators of ancient Greece.
But, are you sure of that? I’m not, but thus is the privilege of a philosopher to make such a comment to introduce a discussion.
I think that this sentence makes more sense:  small moments happen every day but have no other purpose than to be an entertainment or a one-time opportunity.
In fact only a Great Man, a visionary man, the one who is enthusiastic, knows how to transform occasions or moments into opportunities.
