Biography
Doug Curtis, Jr, 66, has been a Rockland Rotarian since 1999. He has held a myriad of positions in his club to include International Board Chair, Past President (2011-12), and a 3-year term as Assistant Governor for Area 10. He is a Paul Harris fellow +3 and has been named Rotarian of the Year in his club twice. Both he and his wife, Ferolyn have attended three International Rotary Conventions. Ferolyn is a retired elementary school teacher and she is also a Rotarian. They also have hosted a Rotary Exchange student from Sweden.
Doug's passion has always been serving the youth of the community and the world. As a Rotarian in 2008, Doug deployed to Colima and the poverty-stricken village of Cofradia de Suchitlan, Mexico with six other members of his club where they were able to distribute clothes to over 400 children at Christmas, and provide them with books for four elementary schools to include a migrant camp in Queseria, Mexico; and put on a Christmas Fiesta for the children. The club was also able to purchase three water purification wells for rural towns in Mexico and Doug helped build a patio for a dormitory for students attending the University of Colima. His Rotary moment came when he was hand pouring cement in a Mexican street in Colima.
Both he and his wife, Ferolyn, have worked on two service projects in the slums of Cape Town, South Africa, planting spinach plants for a local elementary school and by bringing clean water to another school in the Dominican Republic through his work at his company, Edward Jones.
An avid sports fan, Doug was one of the original founders of the Tiger Football Committee, Inc., a non- profit he started in 1993 with four other community members; and became its first President. The Committee was formed to save the Rockland football program. While no longer in existence in the current name, the committee proved to be the foundation for many changes to the Rockland football program and sports in the State of Maine. As a result of the committee's work, the Maine Principal's Association now sponsors co-operative sports teams in Maine. For his work, Doug received awards in Citizenship from the Maine Public Relations Council and the Rockland-Thomaston Chamber of Commerce.
A 30 year Army veteran, Doug was the US spokesperson for a multi-national force during Operation Provide Comfort in Silopi, Turkey, the humanitarian mission to get the Kurds safely our of the mountains in Northern Iraq in 1991; and provide them with food and shelter after the first Gulf War.
Doug is a US Army War College graduate and his military awards include the Legion of Merit and the Humanitarian Service medal. His last assignment was the Army's Emergency Preparedness Officer for the State of Maine. He retired in 2007.
Doug is a graduate of the University of Maine and holds a Masters degrees from the University of Southern California and the Army War College. He and his wife have three grown children, Matthew, Andrea and Michael.
