Each month as I travel our District visiting clubs, I’ve been meeting with local newspapers and radio stations to share the great work our clubs are doing in their communities. Rotary International has six areas of focus. One, Supporting Education has motivated Rotarians throughout the world to responded in many ways including funds and hands on support. District 5020 is no exception. The winner of the 2016/17 Olson Foundation International Club of the year, Parksville AM has also supported schools in Mexico.
This year the Gig Harbor Rotary Club along with the Olson Foundation and the Barillas, Guatemala Rotary club has just completed its third Rachel District Grant in northwest Guatemala.
Linda Krahn, co-chair of the D5020 Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) Committee recently joined a panel of four Rotarians from USA, Sri Lanka, and India to present a session on RFE in Atlanta at the Rotary International Convention
I am Past District Governor 2003‐04 Bill McCarthy and I have taken the opportunity to accept District 5500’s Challenge to get involved in the Ride to End Polio.
Many Rotarians gather annually in November to Ride in the warm Arizona Sun. However, many of us cannot make the trip there due to business or other circumstances. So, I have another way for all Clubs in District 5020 to participate by riding indoors in the week of November 11‐18, 2017.
I encourage everyone to support me in my drive to see the “Drop to Zero”. Please check out the details below.
On Tuesday evening, September 19th, the three Rotary Clubs of the Cowichan Valley held a special film presentation at the Cowichan Centre for Performing Arts to celebrate Rotary Foundations’s 100th anniversary. In addition to the celebration they wanted to bring more awareness to the community of all the good work that Rotary Clubs do both locally and globally. The three clubs are the Rotary Club of Duncan, Rotary Club of Duncan Daybreak and Rotary Club of South Cowichan. They promoted the evening through our Facebook page and Club website.
Rotary Presidential Peace Conference 2018 - Environmental Sustainability and Peace

You will have opportunity to interact with experts in the field, share ideas, visit exhibits, and to take part in an environmental project in Vancouver.
Comox Rotary Club in conjunction with Disaster Aid Canada would like to thank everyone who participated in our Fire Relief Effort for northern BC. We raised almost $12,000 cash and sent an estimate of over $25,000 in goods and products to the Evacuation Centers. In addition to the Rotarians from Comox, we had contributions from the Courtenay Rotary Club and a ton of help from member Jim Thomas.
District 5020 Clubs Participate in Latrine Block Project Ivory Coast
Working on a World Community Service (WCS) is not a quick process and the road to follow might be long, with many pleasant and not so pleasant surprises and sometimes disappointments. It is important to keep focus on the goal, in this case to provide necessary sanitation for heavy public traffic areas to avoid many diseases and to improve the general health condition of the people.
After my visit with my son Mark in November 2015 to the West African Project Fair (WAPF) in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, we started on this project in December 2015. Our club decided to support this project and take the lead. During the past course regular updates were provided to our membership by write-ups and presentations.
The Rotary Club of Nanaimo will be soon holding its semi annual giant used book sale October 13th to 22nd at the Nanaimo North Town Centre.
We expect to have about 90,000 books for sale. The books will be well sorted into non fiction categories, and the fiction books will be sorted by author. The books are a very good bargain as the most you can pay for a book is $3. Pocket books, cook books and kids books are even cheaper. There will also be a collectible and antique section where the books are individually priced.
All the proceeds from the sale go to funding Rotary works in the community and overseas. To date over $850,000 have been raised for Rotary charity projects.
Its a fun time for all at the sale and we would encourage as many Rotarians and their friends as possible to drop by and, of course, buy a book or several.
1) ROTARY FOUNDATION CITATION FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE
Criteria:
The Citation for Meritorious Service recognizes individual Rotarians who have demonstrated outstanding active service to The Rotary Foundation for more than one year. Examples of eligible service include, but are not limited to:
• Service on Foundation committees at the club, district, or international level
• Participation in Foundation grants or programs
• Support of Ambassadorial Scholars, Rotary Peace Fellows, Group Study Exchange teams, or vocational training teams
Financial contributions to the Foundation, however notable, are not relevant considerations for this award.
Eligibility:
An individual may receive this award only once. Any active Rotarian in good standing may be nominated, with the exception of current and incoming district governors, current and incoming RI directors, and current Foundation trustees.
Selection Procedure:
Nominations must be endorsed by the current district governor. Each district may have only one recipient per year. RI World Headquarters must receive the completed nomination form by 30 June.
Rotary’s highest honor recognizes up to 150 Rotarians each year who demonstrate their commitment to helping others by volunteering their time and talents. Current and immediate past district governors and current and past RI directors.
The purpose of the Rotaract Outstanding Project Awards is to recognize exceptional community or international service projects that further focus and increase the humanitarian service goals of Rotary International.
Selection Process:
Each online nomination form must be submitted by 1 February 2018. Awards will be granted to one winner in each of the designated regions. Awards will also be granted to international winners for projects submitted by a single club, projects submitted by more than one club or an entire Rotary district, and multi-district projects. We encourage clubs, districts, and multi-districts to work together to maximize their impact and increase collaboration, however each Rotaract club, district, or multi-district may submit only one project for consideration each year. Winners will be announced at the Rotaract Preconvention Meeting. Projects that took place from 1 February 2017 through 31 January 2018 are eligible for consideration. Rotaract clubs that have received an award in previous years are still eligible to receive an award again.
