Governor’s Message: April 2018
By Tom Carroll, District Governor 2017-18

District Rotary Youth Exchange Chair Maureen Considine’s Illness Update. For those of you that don’t know the specifics, Mo had a stroke that affected her ability to speak and understand language on March 22nd. She has improved slightly, but still has a long road ahead of her. It was recommended by her doctors that she go to intensive inpatient rehab for vigorous therapy regimen; unfortunately, that was not approved by her insurance. Mo’s children are now appealing the decision.

Rotary Friendship Exchange To District 3110 - Northern India
We traveled from February 22, 2018 through March 4, 2018. We arrived in Delhi and stayed overnight before taking a train to Agra.  Navigating a railway station in India can be quite intimidating but finally we were on our way to meet our hosts in Agra.  First impressions of India besides the beautiful, colorful clothing the women wear are the incredible amount of garbage everywhere and the significant number of people living in poverty (at least by North American standards).  There are cows, pigs, dogs and goats roaming aimlessly and feeding off the available garbage.

Membership Retention: 5 Tips For Building Bonds That Last
If you are over 40 then you might remember a 1980’s commercial for the product Krazy Glue. In the commercial a construction worker holds onto his hard hat and is suspended from a steel beam by only the power of one tiny dot of Krazy Glue. Wouldn’t it be nice if that’s all it took for member retention? Unfortunately, it takes a bit more that a drop of Rotary to keep new members, but with the right amount of inspiration and involvement any club can build the bonds that last for many years.

Comox Valley’s Mark R. Isfeld Interact Club Wins Big
Each year Rotary International sponsors a video competition for Interact Clubs around the world.  The goal is to inspire others to take action.  For the 9th annual competition, the theme was “People of Action”.  This year, entries were submitted by 140 Interact Clubs from 28 countries.

Isfeld’s Interact Club’s video was produced, filmed and edited entirely by students in the club.  This project was spear-headed by Kalyssa Heinrich and Vassily Petrousevitch.  To see this video, please go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz38XGvBvg0&feature=youtu.be

Membership: Growing Vibrant Clubs
Almost everyone has heard the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” * It might seem like a reasonable stance to take when things are going well, (and you’re not sure quite why they are) but when it comes to Rotary Membership this stance can often prove disastrous to a club.

Rotary Awards Information
Presidential Citation Awards
There are two Presidential Citations available for your consideration, for fiscal year 2017/2018 and fiscal year 2018/2019. Clubs that are strong and making a positive difference in our communities achieve goals related to Rotary’s three strategic priorities: to support and strengthen clubs, focus and increase humanitarian service, and enhance Rotary’s public image and awareness.

This year’s Rotary Citation will recognize clubs that complete activities that support these priorities. More details are available at https://my.rotary.org/en/news-media/office-president/rotary-citation
