ImageAlexandra Dawley, the recipient of the 2013-14 Rotary District 5020 Ambassadorial Scholarship, has been awarded an additional US$15,000 Global Grant Scholarship through The Rotary Foundation.  The combined value of the scholarships will provide Alexandra a total of US$30,000 to pursue her graduate studies. Alexandra was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Nanaimo Oceanside.

Alexandra will start her Master’s Degree in Social Development at the University of Sussex, England, in September 2013. Her graduate studies in Social Development are a perfect match to Rotary’s focus on Basic Education and Literacy.  It also compliments her passion for education and literacy development programs that promote positive social development for marginalized youth.

In a recent discussion, Alexandra stated:

“I believe that education changes the world. I also believe that in a continually evolving global landscape, methods of community and social development must continually adapt. Ideally, gender disparity would no longer be an issue. In reality, I would like to work towards significantly reducing this disparity. “

Alexandra plans to work in the non-profit sector, either locally or internationally. With her interests in access to education for refugee youth, she will seek employment with an organization such as WUSC (World University Service of Canada), UNICEF or Save the Children.

When Alexandra found out she has been awarded the Global Grant Scholarship, she said:

“I am so excited by this opportunity, honoured to be associated with such a great organization as Rotary, and humbled to be the successful candidate.”

On behalf of the scholarship committee, I would like to congratulate Alexandra and wish her all the best for her studies. We look forward to receiving her progress reports, which we will share with the District.
