Press Release 1/24/14

Where: The Valley Athletic Club
When: March 21, 2014 1:30 pm
What: Strength Testing Event to raise $$ for Polio Eradication
How: Commit at www.manvsmachine.info
Who: A celebration of the Legend of John Henry and Rotary's commitment to eradicate polio
Why: Polio has recently surged forward in affecting new countries as a very contagious infectious disease that must be stopped

Recent events of polio worker's giving their lives for the efforts (and the police who try to protect them) are making headlines. The final push to eradicate the crippling disease must be seen through. At the same time, awareness of the disease in America is ebbing and efforts to draw attention to the issue must be made. A fundraising event celebrating an American Legend, John Henry, will help do both.

Lacey Rotarian, Treacy Duerfeldt, age 47 has committed six months for training to a feat of strength. He will attempt to lift the maximum possible weight of each of 25 Universal and Nautilus machines in less than 75 minutes. The cause is seeking commitments to his efforts and the effort to eradicate polio. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches the first $35M of Rotary fundraising every year. The Man vs. Machine Event funds will be a part of this match.

Go to the event website www.manvsmachine.info to learn more, hear the Johnny Cash rendition of The Ballad of John Henry, and see how to commit to the cause and support the efforts.
