Nominations must be received by me by 9:00 pm on Monday, November 17, 2014.   A suitable form of nomination is attached to this email.  Please complete the form, scan it in Portable Document Format, and send it to me by email.  I will distribute the forms to the other members of the District Nominating Committee.

The selection interviews will be held on Saturday, December 6, at a location near the geographic center of our District – between Victoria and Sequim.  Please ensure that your nominee accepts the requirement to attend the selection interviews.

Please caution your nominee that any form of political campaigning for selection will disqualify the nominee.  The second attachment to this email gives some “Dos and Don’ts”

Qualifications

The Rotary Manual of Procedure, on page 32 indicates as follows:

“Qualifications

At the time of selection, a governor-nominee must

1) Be a member in good standing of a functioning club in the district (RIB15.070.1.)

2) Have full qualifications for membership in the strict application of the club membership provisions, and have a classification whose integrity is without question (RIB 15.070.2.)

3) Have served as president of a club for a full term or be a charter president of a club having served the full term from the date of the charter to 30 June, provided that this period is for at least six months (RIB 15.070.3.)

4) Demonstrate willingness, commitment, and ability, physically and otherwise, to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the office of governor as provided in RI Bylaws section 15.090. (RIB 15.070.4.)

5) Demonstrate knowledge of the qualifications, duties, and responsibilities of governor as prescribed in the RI Bylaws, and submit to RI, through its general secretary, a signed statement acknowledging a clear understanding of them. This statement shall also confirm that the Rotarian is qualified for the office of governor and willing and able to assume the duties and responsibilities of the office and to perform them faithfully. (RIB15.070.5.)”

In addition to the above official qualifications, the leaders of our District believe that prior service on District Council is of great value in preparing a person to become District Governor.  The ideal preparation is to serve at least two years as an Assistant Governor before nomination to become District Governor.   Candidates should be aware that the last dozen or more Past District Governors in our District had previously served as Assistant Governors.

The District Governor Role

Here is a brief overview of the District Governor role.

We are seeking someone who will have the time to learn the role before taking office and then time to fill the role for the 2017-2018 Rotary year.   The role is, essentially, a full-time job that requires extensive travel.  This effort is amply rewarded by the friendships that the Governor gains and by the joy of learning about the wonderful work being done by clubs throughout our District.

Most costs for the District Governor are covered by Rotary International because the District Governor is an officer of Rotary International.  This is explained in the District Policy Manual article 2.01(a).  Some costs are covered by the District.

The District Governor does incur some personal costs for Club 50/50 draws, Club charity events (auctions, wine tasting, etc.), but these costs are entirely optional.

Questions welcome at any time.

Thanks for your help with this important search.
