THAT'S A LOT OF PANCAKES!

In July, 1975, a tradition in Grand Lake began that realized its 45th year in July, 2019 – Grand Lake Rotary’s annual pancake breakfast. All you can eat pancakes, sausage, and juice/coffee with that small town charm.

What’s unique about this tradition is that for the 45th consecutive year, Rotarian Frank Appelhans cooked pancakes. That’s a lot of pancakes! That’s why he is commonly referred to as “Mr. Pancake”. His pancakes are known far and wide as the “best I’ve ever had”, not just because of the secret ingredient but for Mr. Pancake’s cooking expertise.

Serving over 1,200 people in 4 hours on the 4th of July is no small task. The 4th of July and the Buffalo Days pancake events bring in over $10,000 each summer. Combined with Grand Lake Rotary’s weekend bingo events, the club raises over $40,000 each summer, all of which supports various local organizations and individuals in need.

Not to worry about the next 45 years. Mr. Pancake has a succession plan. Travis, Frank’s son, a Rotarian since 2013, started cooking pancakes side by side with Dad several years ago. There are a lot of pancakes left to cook.

Thanks, Mr. Pancake, for your many years of “Service Above Self”, not to mention the “best pancakes I’ve ever had”.
