MLK MARADE INFORMATION

The 2023 MLK Marade festivities will be held on Monday, January 16, which is a federal and state holiday commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Members of all Rotary clubs in District 5450 are invited to participate in the Marade, and we encourage you to talk to your club members about this opportunity.

The events for the day start at 9:30am in City Park near the Martin Luther King Memorial (southwest section of City Park). Various dignitaries and numerous participants will be present to pay respects to Dr. King. It will be an excellent opportunity for Rotarians from various clubs to interact with each other and with other attendees at the event. Also, it is during this time that final decisions will be made regarding the lineup for the Marade. It is to our benefit to have a strong showing.

The Marade itself starts in City Park and walks a short distance to Colfax Avenue. It then proceeds west along Colfax Avenue and ends at Bannock and 14th Streets (approximately a 3-mile walk). The Marade is scheduled to start at 10:45 and end around noon.

Members of all Rotary clubs in District 5450 are invited to participate in the Marade and there will be a 4’X8’ banner in front of the group. All Rotarians are encouraged to wear a Rotary cap or baseball-type hat. This will help the public to recognize the presence of Rotary at the event. Information indicating where to order the caps/hats can be found here.

Since the Marade starts at City Park and ends at Civic Center three miles away, where to park your car presents some logistic issues. It helps that parking restrictions generally do not apply on holidays. Information indicating places to park, carpooling, etc., will be sent within the next week or so.

We are looking into a place for socializing after the Marade. We will update you within the next week or so.

We are encouraging all Rotarians to join us on January 16. We also are encouraging all Rotarians to invite family members to come along. Later in December, we will be asking for estimates of how many Rotarians and family members will be participating.

PARKING INFORMATION

Here are some suggestions for places to park on MLK Day (many parking restrictions do not apply because it is a federal and state holiday).

City Park: Go to “Maps” and scroll to SW section of City Park (17th Avenue and York Street). The morning events start at 9:30 and will take place in that general area (MLK Memorial, City Park Esplanade). Places to park: East High School parking area on west side of high school; streets west of York Street; streets east of East High School; and streets on north side of Colfax Avenue.
The Marade starts around 10:45 in City Park, proceeds west on Colfax Avenue and ends at Civic Center.

Civic Center: The Marade will end at 14th Avenue & Bannock Street. Parking is available on streets south of 14th Avenue (both sides of Broadway) and streets north of Colfax Avenue (both sides of Broadway). These are suggested places to consider for carpooling so that you have a vehicle to use for getting back to City Park.

For those who park at City Park, and do not arrange carpooling at Civic Center, options for getting back to your car include walking, Lyft/Uber and a city bus.

AFTER THE PARADE!

After the Marade, we encourage all Rotarians and their families to come to Pints Pub and socialize over drinks and food. Pints Pub is located at 221 West 13th Avenue (about 1 block from 14th & Bannock, where the Marade ends). Check the website (www.pintspub.com) for more details about Pints Pub and to learn about some parking options.
