As this challenging year is nearing its end, I would like to share a light and cheerful news from one of the international projects of our District, a Philippine Project funded by a grant from District 5450 entitled “Enhancing Filipino Organic Farmers Seed Independence with Global Seed Savers.”
Attached is an e-mail message from Sherry Manning, Founder & Executive Director of Global Seed Savers (GSS), our Partner Organization in this Project.  As the Grant Champion of this District Grant Project, I have worked very closely with Ms. Manning and have observed her tireless dedication to the very impressive efforts by GSS to help small independent farmers in the Philippines be free of the use of chemicals and maintain organic farming.  I have made a site visit to the Philippines and closely worked with her and the Philippine Manager, Karen Lee Hizola.  To date, the progress of the Project has shown significant positive effect on the farmers’ productivity, security, and sense of communal belonging.
This year our project received the “Rotary Preserve Planet Award”.  Being from the Philippines myself, I feel proud to be part of this Project.
Respectfully yours,
Ernesto A. Amaranto, MD.

I wanted to Thank You all again for your generous support of Global Seed Savers and our incredible partner farmers throughout the Philippines. While 2020 has been challenging it has also brought new partners and expanded the need for our work of ensuring communities have ready access to local food and seeds. I also wanted to send you all a quick update from the field. Since moving to one of our partner farms in the North of Cebu Harry, our Cebu Program Coordinator has been busy!!
Thanks to Rotary support we have accomplished the following and will complete these projects by the end of Q1 2021.
- Established Seed Production Area at Arapal Farm
- Invested in materials needed to support expanded on farm seed trials at Arapal.
- Identified area at Arapal Farm for new Seed Library. (will be completed in 2021)
- Distributed Seed Cabinets to 20 Cebu Seed Saver Members. Each Seed Cabinet contains seed storage jars, seed envelopes, materials needed for on farm seed production, and resource materials on how to best save seeds.
In addition, we are thrilled to report that the core members of the Benguet Association of Seed Savers (BASS) that have been growing more quantities of seed now have over 20 varieties of locally produced seed (over 3,000 kgs) that are ready for sale.
As we approach the end of 2020, I want you to know that our impact is deepening and with your continued support we can respond to this growth by investing in our staff, expanding our programs to urban areas, launching farmer seed sales, and bringing our technical training programs to new regions and communities.
We are currently only $2,000 short of reaching our year-end campaign goal of $5,000! Your year-end gift to Global Seed Savers will be transformative and ensure we can continue to accomplish our goals in the coming year.

Thank you for your support of our dedicated partner farmers and sending you all wishes for safe and Happy Holidays!
