Rotary Scholarship Program Introduction

Please note that the Rotary Scholarships sponsored by Rotary District 5450 are for Graduate Scholars who live in, study in or work in District 5450 (generally the Denver/Boulder Metro Areas of Colorado USA) and are planning on studying outside the United States.

Rotary Scholarships are the oldest program of the Rotary Foundation and probably the best-known. Since its inception in 1947, over 40,000 men and women have studied abroad under its auspices in over 150 countries. This program, called Ambassadorial Scholarships, was the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program, with as many as 800 scholarships awarded each year to students for study in a country other than their own. The PRE-Application Deadline will be October 16, 2023.

Under this program, scholars have served as goodwill ambassadors to the country where they studied, sharing cultures and developing long-lasting friendships. Many former scholars have achieved high-level leadership positions in their home countries in government, industry and the professions.

In 2017, the Rotary Foundation’s mission was revised: to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. The Ambassadorial Scholarship program was closed and a new Rotary Scholarship program developed in line with the restated mission of The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary Scholarships are now awarded to students with strong experience in humanitarian service who want to enhance their background through graduate studies in one of Rotary’s seven identified Areas of Focus. These scholars are selected based on work experience, proposed studies and future career plans and are evaluated in light of Rotary’s new motto: “Doing Good in the World.”

The seven Areas of Focus covered by Rotary Scholarships are:
  1. Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution
  2. Disease Prevention and Treatment
  3. Water and Sanitation
  4. Maternal and Child Health
  5. Basic Education and Literacy
  6. Economic and Community Development
  7. Environmental Sustainability
