The Health and Disease Prevention Committee aims to improve and expand access to low-cost and free health care in underdeveloped areas. Our members educate and mobilize communities to help prevent the spread of major diseases such as polio, HIV/AIDS, and malaria. Many of our projects ensure that medical training facilities are located where the workforce lives.  More than 100 million people are pushed into poverty each year because of medical costs.
 
Mental Health Initiative
 
Rotarians for Mental Health (https://r4mh.org/) brings together resources and information from Rotary Clubs around the country to build stronger communities through involvement and education in order to raise awareness, foster compassion and develop broad-based support for those affected by mental health and substance use disorders.
 
It is estimated that about 20% of US adults suffer from a mental illness in any given year, yet only about 40% will receive treatment. Of course, mental illness is not limited to adults; many of our children are also afflicted.
 
Commerce City Rotary rolled out the Mental Health Initiative at Adams City High School in 2015. The Interact Club of Adams City High School took it upon themselves to produce a video to show what mental health may look like: https://youtu.be/uBGupggPDg8. Knowing the signs and how to offer assistance for mental health is as important as knowing CPR!
