Here is a short description of the topic and a bio of our presenter program, Barb Chambliss.

TOPIC: Conscious Peacemaking Across the Generations
Barbe zigzagged the world interviewing over fifty ordinary women doing extraordinary acts of peacemaking. In the process she uncovered a kind of peacemaking that is proactive, collaborative, and can be done by anyone. She will explain the nature of this kind of peacemaking, how it is done, who does it, and how it has the potential to make war irrelevant.

BIO:  Barbe Chambliss, formerly a trauma therapist, is a mediator, grows organic apples, and is the author of the book, Women Peacemakers: What We Have To Learn From Them. The book tells the stories of fifteen ordinary women doing extraordinary acts of peacemaking that Barbe interviewed as she zigzagged the globe.

In Aspen, Colorado, Barbe directed the volunteer Center for Conflict Resolution. Shortly after the terrorist attacks in New York City, she published and distributed a “Working Compendium of Non-violent Responses to 9/11.”  Barbe facilitates Restorative Justice Circles and has spent time working on a U.S. military base to better understand how war is made. She has taught mediation to over 600 children and adults in rural Colorado schools, and is currently teaching high school students Conscious Peacemaking, which she learned from the women in her book.

Her Ph.D. dissertation, entitled Contemporary Women Peacemakers: The Hidden Side of Peacemaking, ignited three decades of interviews with over 50 women across the world exploring the nuts and bolts of how peace is actually made. Midway in this journey she volunteered as a counselor in a Croatian camp providing safe haven for children who had recently survived the Bosnian War. Doing so changed everything for her. Her goal in life now is to wake up the conscious peacemaker in as many people as possible in her lifetime.

Barbe is a fourth generation Coloradoan. She’d rather sleep under the stars than beneath a roof, and revels in being outdoors in all seasons of her beloved Rocky Mountains. She recharges her soul and does her best writing at her yurt, perched 8,000 feet high on the edge of an alpine meadow she shares with a herd of elk, a chorus of coyotes, and a family of pesky marmots. For fun she sings in a cowboy corral.
