DG CURT HARRIS' MONTHLY MESSAGE

DG Curt Harris gives us an update on efforts to rid the world of polio.

The good news is that in August 2019 Nigeria celebrated 3 years with no wild polio cases. Unfortunately Afganistan and Pakistan have seen an increase in wild polio cases this year, up to 79 YTD from 33 total cases last year.

While this news is disheartening, Rotary is caustiously optimistic we can turn around this trend. October 24 is World Polio Day and many clubs are planning events. Rotary is committed to raising $50 million this year and next, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match this 2:1 - that's a total of $150 million. Find out more on how you can help by clicking the video link below.

Investing in the Next Generation of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Professionals

Despite progress, billions of people still lack safe water, sanitation and hand washing facilities worldwide. More efficient use and management of water resources and a focus on the investment in the professional capacity development of the next generation of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) professionals is vital to the future sustainability of the sector. PEACEFUL SCHOOLS PROGRAM & DANIELS FUND PARTNER

The Peaceful Schools Program is a powerful, proactive, and proven curriculum created by local Rotarians and educators to promote ethical behavior in children and youth. Over the past five years, this program has been implemented in 30 schools in the Denver Front Range, positively impacting more than 2,500 elementary school children.

With the generous support of the Daniels Fund, the program plans to extend its reach from 30 to 100 schools in Colorado by rebranding as the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Elementary School Program, while expanding curricula and instructional tools to encompass all elementary school grades (K-6).

It’s Flu Season! Have You Received Your Vaccine?

Last year only 45% of Coloradans received their vaccination. Although it is recommended for everyone over 6 months of age, older adults are especially at risk of becoming very ill or dying. Charges to treat flu in Colorado last year totaled over $367 million, with $264 million in charges to treat the 4,753 people who were hospitalized with flu, and $103 million to treat the 20,550 people who visited an Emergency Department due to flu. This does not include the $11 million in lost wages and productivity.
